Speck ASC would fit the bill.
API 550 but you need the lunchbox.

You mentioned Tube-Tech; are you looking for a Pultec style or a
conventional parametric á la Massenburg?

thanks guys........not sure as to what I'm looking for I've been using vst's mainly in this arena (Waves and Voxengo) and can't help but think I am missing out on something more spectacular in the hardware dept.

someone told me if I was to ever use strictly software that I should remain in hardware in the eq and compression department......any thoughts on eq vst's ? the stuff I've been using seems to bring levels up and down but doesn't necessarily add much character

thanks

How about the Avedis?

Plugin wise, I find the API emulation by URS to have a good amount of character.

The Buzz MPE 1.1 is a little over your budget, but might be worth your consideration.
