building a Garage Mix room.....

Well, I just got the ok to take the WHOLE garage by the wifey.... to make room for a mix room....well, I'd LIKE to be ale to mix there.... looks like I'll have about 15x13...

Ya'll think it's doable? Anyone have PICs of such a set up?

I'm in the box with probably an 8 ch Dcommand... I want to be able to do surround as well....

thanks!

I think the garage is 22x18, but the useable area for me will be about 15x13. I need to keep some storage, toy space.

Do you need to worry about the sound disturbing anyone?

I really don't need to worry about Isolation. the garage is the bottom floor, alone, with our living space the two floors above. There are no shared walls either.

I'm mainly doing pre-production/ programming, very occasional vocal odub ( most recording will be done at the studio, 4 miles away-my day gig) But I certailnly want to be able to build a space that will allow me to MIX ... I'll rarely crank it, I mix at pretty low levels.

I'd like to build it suitable for some surround work as well...( not that I have any, but would like to dabble at some point )

now that the wife has agreed to give up "the man space" i have a lot more options as to how to orient the room... I just need to leave a nook for laundry and a 5ft wide walk way with wall space to hang some bikes.... I think that will give me as much as13 ft of space behind, and a width of about15-18 ft. ( i need to leave a spot at the front of the garage to drop gig gear.
ceiling height looks to be about 9 ft. I'm not planning on floating any floors or anything, but will try to make it as acoustically sound as I can.

Nice design man! I won't need to go that crazy with tracking rooms tho.... MAYBE a booth , but I doubt it... probably cut vox in the CR with cans.

Do you know Picksail down there in N. O. ?

Nuk- that looks killer. I think I'm going to cop that design minus the booth and couch space.... maybe a couch. thumbsup

could you drop some details as to what you've done acoustically - absorbers, trapping etc. I'm pretty happy with the mini traps in the mothership CR, And I think I'd probably go that way and try not to burn too much area by building into the walls ( the acoustics)

How's it sound in there? you happy with it all? would you do anything different?
how are you ventilating it? is it a roll top garage? or are you just not using the garage door at all?

more pics plz! thanks!

here is the layout for my mix room.
i would also recommend http://www.johnlsayers.com/ my set-up has already got his stamp of approval as well.
the jpg dose not show it but the ceiling is also angled to the front and covered with slat's same as the walls.
their will be a bit more bass trapping at the back then is shown and more yet were the ceiling and back wall meet.
hope this helps
p.s my room is 10'x12'x8' ceiling

You most likely don't need the trapping unless you have concrete walls because you don't need to be isolated.

Just make the room comfortable and spend the money left over on better monitors.

This post really surprised me. Not the advice I expected to hear

Care to elaborate?

Stiff, isolated rooms such as a studio/control room suite have huge standing wave problems that have to be dealt with. The minute you can let go of isolation as a goal, you can work with leaky walls that the low frequencies just pass right on through to the outside.

The requirements of isolation and of good sound inside the room are in almost total conflict!

Go for the cool inside control room sound and shake da house!

For me in the city, other folks hearing MY noise is an issue

Hearing it and it disturbing their - work
Hearing it and it disturbing their - sleep
Passing criminals hearing it and locating my business as a theft target

You can slightly hear the tube (subway) in my vocal booth.. oh well... the build-out cost wasn't very high....

This should be an interesting thread

Bob, from the info I learned from John Sayers, that's why u try to design a room with no parallel walls. You need to kill flutter echo and standing waves in the mix position(sweet spot) as much as possible. Bass trapping is needed in smaller rooms. and some high-mid/Low-mid control. My room songs real good. My mixes translate very well. Other producers come to my studio and say "Dam, my Mackie's don't sound like that............. what did you do to them."

The ceiling has a large hanger (rockwool- 6") above the mix position.

Hey Nuk,
That's a very nice setup.
What are the dimensions on your vox booth and live room?

Non parallel walls do not remove room mode or standing wave problems! Bob's right on the money (as always of course thumbsup ): the more bass that can through the walls, the less trapping is needed.

A good solution is to start with treating for early reflections and use broad-frequency absorption as much as possible.

The John Sayers site is a great resource for layout design and construction. For more in-depth knowledge check the studiotips.com acoustical forum. It's moderated by Eric Desart, who actually (co)designed the great Galaxy Studios in Belgium. There are some frequent visitors on that forum who are higly knowledgeble and experienced in the field of small room acoustics. Very much worth checking out.

Greetings,
Dirk

Dirk? Your right. but allowing sound to go through the walls seems cool......if u'r in the middle of the desert with no one around. But 99.9% of us live near other people, some of us have the great fortune of have loving neighbors that bitch about any and everything.

CR is about 10' front, 14' rear, 14' deep.
Live is about 10' front, 7' read, 12' deep
booth is about 4' x 6'

all 9.5' ceilings with hangers
