bedroom acoustics

hey guys, i am the proud owner of a bedroom studio, and i'm seriously considering remodeling my bedroom to be more of a studio with a bed in it instead of vice versa. my big question is, what are some good resources for making the best of the acoustics of my room, as it is my control room and live room... and i don't want to just go blindly gluing foam on the walls or anything. thanks for the help!

P.S. also any help with quieting my god forsaken screeching vacuum of a computer, and minimizing outside noise (there's the washer and dryer plus a bathroom above the room, a staircase along one wall, the water heater in the adjacent closet and the air conditioner right outside the window) would be great.

Put your wardrobe in the corners to act as basstraps!
Get a folding bed (even better a sofa bed) to get more space.
If you have a carpet and curtains you would not need any muffeling, but you might want to build some diffusors!

Talk about sacrificing for your art!

Auralex has a free consultation feature on their website here
You can e-mail them a plan of your room showing the dimensions, location of speakers etc. and they will tell you where to put the foam. You should keep in mind that they are selling foam and probably buy somewhat less than they recommend. I followed their general plan and am quite happy with the results. You may need to add a "real" bass trap.

I like the Auralex "metro" style- it neatly avoids that Egg Carton look.

I tried them for help but, even with me buying a 400$ roominator kit for the house, they would not get too involved in recommendations. But maybe they've changed.

It worked well for me about this time last year- you download a PDF and fill it out and then e-mail or fax it back to them. I made no promise to buy anything from them, though I eventually did

Apart from getting rid of duff sounds by using basstraps etc, unless you're going to record anything which isn't close mic-ed it won't make too much difference. Apart from your monitoring that is.

A really cheap tip is this: Buy some thin slotted wood flooring that you can construct a more live area with. 4 squares should make you a floor that has a lot more ping for recording acoustic instruments better. It can just sit on the carpet. You can get this from any floor specialist/wood supplier. It's only about 17 stirling over here per square which are about 2.5 meters each way.

One way of shutting your computer up is by puting it in a flightcase. Ok its not perfect but if you've already got one lying around stick it in there.

if you leave it in there forever, yes!

But being able to stick the front on when you're going to do a take could be useful.
