you could go the dbx way, or an ART Digital MPA...

Or you could get a used RME ADI-2 on ebay, and use any preamp you want with it. (I got mine used for about $550). You'll also be getting yourself some pretty high quality (vs. the stock digi conv.) conversion.

I would suggest not to go too cheap on this. If you are gonna get a channelstrip get something that offers something your 003 doesn't. My recommendation is the SSL Alphachannel. It has a quiet smooth solid sounding Micpre with harmonic knob for added hair if needed. Also there is real SSL filter(low cut) and EQ on board. The EQ shapes vocals, Drums and samples with ease and the SSL AIR on the sound. I think it is one of the better channel strip deals out there. Also includes a stereo A/D convertor that sound very good and has excellent seperation and detail! They are about 1200.00 new. I don't really know what they go for used but mine is for sale at 940.00!

+1 about getting something the 003 doesn't offer. Unless you just need more I/O with preamps?

I've got the API A2D going via SPDIF to 003 and I've been in love with that unit since I got it.

I picked up a Joe meek twinQ stereo channel strip pretty cheap... it does everything i expected it should... and stays away from my analog inputs...

if i were to look at something for spdif toady I would be thinking API A2D but at the moment its down the list, as those inputs are utilised for now...

+1 on the SSL Aplha Channel. Have used it on many different instruments, all with good results. Though it really shines on vocals.

They dropped the price to $995 new. If you called and talked with a sales person i'm sure you could get it even lower.

Sorry reborn might want to drop that used price a little

The API is great. Personally the DBX 386 is the only external preamp I have ever tried that I decided not to ever use on anything.

For the australian guy, look into the single channel at ~Sebatron~ Discrete Class A Pro Audio Professional Recording Equipment and Valve Preamplifiers (made in Oz) (edit, I just looked, apparently they don't make the single channel anymore)
