I just watched Natural Born Killers. While the credits are rolling, they play The Future by Leonard Cohen (which came out in the early 90s). It blew me away. I've actually never listened to him before! So I'll be getting into that and seeing where that takes me...

Before that though? Possibly Bleed by Meshuggah, which has given me tendinitis twice in my left foot from trying to play it on drums! Or I Will Follow You Into The Dark by Deathcab For Cutie, which has the most beautiful lyrics I've heard.

Actually, scratch all that. Every Ween song. I hadn't heard them before a couple years ago, and they have become my all-time favorite band.

Not much for me this year. However, these somewhat "modern" tracks really opened my eyes in certain regards and definatly have been very influential to me.

Aphex Twin: "4 (LP version)" and "Girl/Boy" off the Richard D. James album
Flaming Lips: "Do you Realize" off Yoshimi and "The Gash" off Soft Bulletin
Beatles: "Because" off the Love Album
Broadcast: "Color Me In" off the Ha Ha Sound Album
Broken Social Scene: "KC Accidental" off the You Forgot it People album
Tortoise: "Cornprone Brunch" off the Self Titled album

"Essence" Lucinda Williams - just seminal lyrically courageous and incredible live sound on Live At The Fillmore also love the guitar work and how much an alt country 3-piece rocks out with lots of dynamics.

The Foo Fighters song "Learning to Fly" represents to me a ballad of how the guitar rock I like is disappearing - listening to the song is kind of like looking down at "rock music as I know it" and flying away from it forever.. A sad departure, leaving something behind..The last rock song....

It a zeitgeist / music scene / studio career timing thing...

Anyhow the melancholy chords twang something in me.. it has an "end of an era" sound to it...

But I like it..

+1 for guitar rock and the Fighters! For me it's been a similar but more encouraging feeling of a passing of the torch. It is the music of Steve Lukather's son Trev. He has been working with Tommy Henriksen and is about to release his first record. He has his dad's immense talent, but more so as a songwriter. The biggest surprise was a very mature ballad(he was 19 or 20 when he wrote it) called "Breakdown For Eternity". It's timing punctuated the senseless murder of my mother in-law by her black widower new husband. Sorry to be so blunt, the positive I was getting at is this new generation talent that is born of the classic roots that we know and love. Hearing him gave me hope that the present musical "dark ages" might be nothing more than an artistic recession that won't last much longer!

rock - foo fighters
punk/heavy - blink 182 (drums!!!!!! bass...sick!)
pop/charts - Maroon 5 - Songs about Jane (super, super polished, sound design at the peak!!)

but my latest love and right now the biggest influence with so many great ideas:

DANIEL LANOIS - "Here is what is" (donīt bother with amazon etc., go and order the gold edition straight from his website!!!.....best 60$ I ever spent on recording/studio!)

fantastic sounds, fantastic playing, fantastic people and unbelievable fantastic songs!

Not so new, but anyway:

Depeche Mode - The Dead of Night ( incredible sonics there)

Sevendust - Trust ( how I'd like to get a metal band sounding)

Foo Fighters - Let it Die ( Huuuge sound)
