Honestly, the Chameleon Labs 7602 is a great drum pre and the EQ suits it nicely as well which will net you more powerful sounds than swapping out preamps all day.

My Recordings/Credits

Used Vintech X73i. I paid $900 for mine with PSU and it sounds great. I love the EQ.

Hey War

Is that unit any good? Can you compare the audio quality to something else?

Allen, they are great and once you add in the EQ / filter section it is over the top with goodness. There are 3 versions there also, stock / partial mod / full mod.

BAE 312a will yield amazing results on drums for under $700 but it's a 500 series so you need the rack too.

Thanks for testing out the modded versions War. I've been pretty curious about it. Would you say the mod affects the character of the EQ at all, or is it mostly to beef up the Preamp section of the unit?

I don't own the 7602, but have used them on a few occasions, and borrowed a pair from a friend for a month or so a year back. Instantly fell in love with 'em, mainly regarding the EQ section, but the preamps were no slouch either.

I'de also recommend the JFET Hamptone kits if you're handy with a soldering iron. Great units IMO.
