Plugins? OR External PRE?

I Have a duet running logic and think its fantastic, I got a grace M101 external pre and found it to be just a tad 10% percent better Pres. than the duets pres. Just a bit more loud and clear and prominent. But I questioned wether thats enough of an improvement to justify 565$!

My friend has the neve plugins from UAD and he sculpted some sounds for me! I found the reverb, eq, and compressor to be much better than the logics plugs. I felt that had more impact on my sound than the grace M101.

Do you think I should sell the grace m101? and buy the UAD plugins, or perhaps get the API Collection? do you think that will sculpt my sound more ?

The UAD plugins would give your sound more color than the Grace. If you like working in the box, I would say go for it. Otherwise maybe a colorful preamp would work for you.

thats defenitely what I have been wanting is to add color, and I find that logics plugs just dont give that shine. almost but dont do it.

I like that with the plugins I can adjust accordingly i I have only a colored pre its hard to bring down the color.

plus a colored pre like api512 will run me 1100bucks! just cant do that.

UAD 1073, helios, 1176, la2a are great. Another great plugin for color is Colortone pro.

jeez - the TriTone stuff is already pretty cheap, I think...especially for the quality. I've got a lot of plugs that do 'color' and the TriTone stuff tops them all.

You definitely can't go wrong with the UAD stuff - but if you start adding the plugs you'll need (verbs, EQ's, comps) then you're likely looking at at least a $800+ investment...and possibly more depending on how many instances you want to be able to use simultaneously.

You might want to check out the HydraTone EQ instead of the ColorTone if you want more control.
