Session with George Massenburg

Two weeks ago I had the great pleasure of hanging out and working with George Massenburg. The session was for a jazz sextet. It went smoothly and was very pleasant, and on top of everything I got to learn a lot from the man. As those who have had the pleasure of working with George know, he is extremely intelligent and practical, which translated to the session being rather fast-paced. In the middle of all the commotion (and I mean this in the best way possible) I was able to snap a few pictures of the set-up, so I decided to start this thread to post those pictures and share a little bit about the session, if anyone is interested. Here they are. Thanks,

Ed

Looks like Earthworks... with an odd windscreen.... maybe....

Did he record straight to disk with only pre-amps, or did he use super-clean processing on some stuff?

Very little processing on the way in. EQ only IIRC.

yeah.

i have never been on any of his berklee sessions, but he would come in and talk to my mix class with prince charles alexander, who also rules.

i should note, that studio A live room sounds like some serious poo. he could sort of pull it off ok, at least from the sessions that i heard. it still have a weird "recorded at berklee" sound to it. hard to describe.

studio E live room is by far the best room in the place, especially with using reflective gobos.

Hey Shane,

that was my first and only time in Studio A at Berklee. One of my friends is an MP&E major at Berklee and he invited me to the session since George was "running" it. I noticed the room didn't sound great, but it certainly sounded better than my room so it didn't bother me too much.

Love the setup! SM7 on hats, 4038's on horns

I wouldn't say the A room sound is "poo", Its a fine cutting room, Vibe wise is could use a checkup tho.
E is a great room, acoustics guitars sound great in E.

Cool post Ed!

Couldn't agree more! It struck me as very classroom'ish and not very studio'ish. I think it was the colors the walls were painted. But hey, it sounds decent which is the most important thing. Throw up some sweet christmas lights and repaint the walls and the vice is already half of the way there!
