Perhaps they could have a 'retro skin' as a selectable option!

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work as a plugin (VST etc.)

That means you have to leave your DAW to use the tuner which seems silly!

wonder how they account for inherent latency?

I've installed this software on my laptop so I can use it at home and the studio.

It does exactly what it says on the tin, albeit in a funky strobe tuner type way .

One thing I like is the presets for weird tunings and depending on the instrument you're tuning there are presets for bass, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, etc.

Agreed, a plugin version would be even greater!

Cheers,
Rich

But that's the problem isn't it? When you are in the middle of recording with your DAW you don't want to quit it to use the tuner? Or is there any other way around?

You don't have to quit your DAW.

You can have the tuner running all the time, you just 'power' it on or off when you want to use it - it has a Power button for that reason.

In Nuendo I just enabled Release ASIO driver when in background and it works fine with the tuner.

Cheers.

I just got the Strobosoft. Nice tuner....works like the hardware unit with regards to ballistics and lights etc. One note to future buyers: The unlock code authorization requires your machine to be connected to the internet. Since my DAW is not connected, nor does it even have a modem, I had to phone in for support.

They were very helpful and managed to provide me with an unlock code in a few minutes, but they were a little confused at first, as they haven't encountered this situation yet. The install generates a machine code that must be responded to with a very lenghty unlock code. The only problem I see for myself is thus: I use removeable drive bays and at least a couple of times a year I'm setting up new OS drives. Every time I want to install the tuner on a new system drive I'll have to go through the registration process. They also only provide you with a couple of unlock codes per device. I got the impression after speaking with Peterson support that after a couple of installs, they expect you to repurchase the software. I hope that won't be the case. I understand the need for security from software designers, but I really hate cumbersome and limited software authorization.

Therein lies the key issue. I couldn't dream of intonating a guitar in software, it'd drive me freakin nuts... let alone just tuning it.

Is this any better than the free "C-Tuner" VST plugin? By the way, I can't find an URL to C-Tuner, so I've posted it here.

This is a shareware file, so nothing is being done wrong.

I'm not familiar with the C-Tuner, but this tuner blows away the old software tuner I had been using. It's got a lot of cool vibe as well! I also had an email from my support tech at Peterson. He saw my post here and wanted to clarify that repurchasing the software after a couple of installs is not required. He assured me that they will accomodate the needs of any registered buyers.

Judging by the level of support I received the other night, all will be fine. Hope you get your Mac version soon Jules

I tried that Bomb Factory tuner, but the latency was really frustrating. Still using Korg DTR-1's

Although just think about how accurate the pitch would be with some really high-end clocking!

This thread implies to me that there is a market for a plug-in that behaves exactly the same as the Strob-O-Conn. I use the C-Tuner for synth stuff, and the "strobe" function of the tuner in GuitarRig when I'm doing soft guitars, but I've thought about having Audio Damage make a strobe tuner plugin for VST/AU that was the same as the Strob-O-Conn, since that's the tuner I prefer. The C-Tuner's needle moves too fast for my taste; at the least I've thought about making a tuner that had a lag setting for the needle.

It wouldn't be the hardest of tasks to make the Strob-O-Conn; chances are we could put it at the $39.00 price point along with our other small plugs. Aside from making it basically the same as a Strobe-O-Conn, are there other features that would be desirable in a soft-tuner that I'm not thinking of? Keep in mind that the more features, the more time we spend on it, and thus the more expensive it becomes.

These are pretty nifty. I have no clue how accurate they are.

Okay, I got the Deluxe version of the StroboSoft, and for the money it is the best soft-tuner going, hands down. I don't know how it would work in a PT system, but running it with my PC Nuendo system, I had no troubles whatsoever.

Quite frankly, I don't see the need for a plug-in version, because standalone works fine. As long as you have the ASIO set in Nuendo to release in background, the tuner can grab any pair of inputs on your soundcard concurrently. I have a TL Audio mic pre that I normally run with channel 1 being my standard bass / guitar input, and channel 2 being my modular synth. Since both of these channels need frequent tuning, I just leave the StroboSoft across that pair of inputs and it's just a matter of bringing it to the foreground and tuning up.

Functionally, in Chromatic mode, it seems to be pretty similar to Peterson's normal hardware fare. There are, of course, an assload of extras, alternate tunings and such. These are found mainly in Instrument mode. There is an image of the guitar strings, and the appropriate string lights up when you're tuning. There are 23 different "standard" tuning methods for guitar.

As far as accuracy goes, seems to be spot on. I tried it out with an HP 200CD oscillator I have, and it was good down to just below C -2, and well above D5. (In my experience, software tuners seem to have the most trouble with low frequencies. This isn't the case with the Peterson one, at least not in useable frequency ranges.)

So, as with all things, YMMV, but quite frankly I can think of worse ways to spend $79.00.
