Cubase AI? How does it compare?

Hi all,

I'm looking at buying the Yamaha MW816 CSX firewire interface.

I was planning on getting Cubase SX3 or possibly Cubase 4 to run alongside it (Windows).

However, I see that the unit comes with Cubase AI in the box. How does this compare?

Cheers,

Jim

I've got a Motif XS8 -- it took me about a week to connect it to AI via firewire.

Then I got Logic 8. I think it took Logic (not me) 2 minutes to make the connections. The irony...

Well, the Yamaha MR816 CSX is designed for use with Cubase, so I'm not really anticipating any problems there.

I just wondered what the difference is between SX3 (or indeed the newer v4) and the AI version that is bundles with the unit?

Is it like a 'lite' version of 4 i.e. it doesn't have all the features, but does support full integration with the Yamaha interface (unlike SX3 which only supports some features)?

Cheers!

I use cubase ai4 with a yamaha n-12 and it works mint ,very stable,if you want more tracks,plug-ins and virtual instruments you would have upgrade to cubase 4,but for my needs it's just fine,jz

Hi,

How much does it cost to upgrade from AI4 to 4 proper?

This sounds like it might be the ideal path for me. It will save money to start with but enable me to upgrade without having to change anything major.

Yeah, but AI was designed for Motif XS...

Anyway, AI seemed a bit more stable than SX3. Doesn't compare to Logic IMO, though.

What are the main differences between AI and the full version?

I had Protools LE before, and that was ok for my needs.

48 audio tracks and some decent plugs could well be all I need for now!

Cheers for that!

Hi people,

i can't seem to be able to install cubase ai 4 on my macbook pro. I bought the yamaha audiogram 3 / cubase ai 4 bundle last week, but when i try to install ai4 on osx it hangs during 'a few minutes remaining' time of installation.. It's wierd, very strange because it just hangs there whilst the rest of osx works fine. ??!

Can anybody help, or has anybody experienced this problem with osx and ai4 ??

Thanks,

iesto

I'm on Mac OSX Snow Leopard, and the installer just sits forever on "Running package scripts..." - "Install time remaining: Less than a minute".

This the software that came with my Yamaha MW10c mixer.

I want to get more channels when recording, since Garageband only seems to see one channel over the usb from the mixer.

Same problem here! It's been sitting there for a while, not doing anything. Mine came with Motif XS... AI sucks =)

To make use of MR816CSX integrated features you need at least Cubase (Studio) 4.5 (or latest AI4). You can of course use it with SX3 but just as a 'ordinary' interface.

There are upgrade paths for the bundled AI4 to go to either Cubase Studio 5 or full Cubase 5. There's even a special offer at the moment to upgrade AI to Cubase Studio 5

And for you on Snow Leopard, Cubase is going to be updated in mid-december to be 10.6 compatible.

You can also have a used Cubase 4 full retail. Sometimes one or two pop into ebay at really good prices ($150-200).
