Recommend a Mixing Engineer

I have some of my own songs that I wanna try and experiment and have some one else mix . I don't want another Pro Tools rig full of plugins all over the place I can do that here . I'm thinking , mixed on an old Neve or API by another mixing engineer whos been around . Nothing fancy , regular old rock n' roll mixes , ran through legendary gear . Can you recommend anyone ?

Lots. Got a budget to narrow it down? Number of songs? Do you want to be present?

Cool ,

Yeah I can be very specific ........

I want to do 5 of my punk songs mixed . Not todays punk.....punk from the late 70's early 80's . Like Buzzcocks , Ramones , MC5 , very stripped down .

Left OverHead
Right Overhead
Kick
Snare

Maybe floor tom , if needed

Bass - DI

Guitar 1 - Left
Guitar 2 - Right
Lead Guitar

3 Vocal tracks at most

So Mixing the songs will be easy , thats only 12 tracks of audio per song , just throw up the faders and go ! No editing or comping tracks I'll prepare everything . Little reverb on the snare , maybe a little short delay on the vocals and Lead guitar , really dry sounding , leave that up to the mixer , get some ideas from him . Make it sound like punk bands did back then , when they cut an album in an afternoon .

I want the songs mixed using an old API or Neve .

I don't know if I want to be present . Part of me doesn't want to pass up a chance finally working on a console and learning more , but also I kinda want to leave it in his hands , just worry about writing the music , get it back and enjoy that bit of magic not knowing what he did to it to make it sound like it does .

I got into recording in the late 90's and have pretty much been ITB with Pro Tools , I know very sad . So I wanna give the console a try to see what I'm missing ,

i think what you might be missing, is the point. its not the gear that will get you where you want to be.

Well, obviously if you want to be there, you need to find somebody local. That narrows down the choices. Also, there are some big-name guys that will do indie stuff for less than their usual fee depending on their availability, but even "less" could be real money depending on your budget. There's also the possibility of booking the engineer and the studio separately, in which case you can do it wherever you want on whatever console you like. This definitely can get expensive. As to the gear, don't get too bogged down on specific pieces to tie the mixer's hands, but yes, it's reasonable to say you want a console mix for this rather than an ITB mix. That, again, helps narrow down the choices. I'll PM you a couple possible names.

If you're in the Bay Area, there are none better at console mixes than
Stephen Hart.

Stephen Hart Mixer

I hear he has a great new facility up in Marin.

He's 100% ITB now, as far as I understand it.

That said, it's the people, not the gear. The idea of wanting a certain person to mix just because they can mix on an API or a Neve or whatever other board seems a little silly to me.

He's both ITB and OTB ... from his years at Fantasy, he knows the
boards very very well.
