Help...Whats A KRK 703C???

For about a month, I'm going to be having to mix on a pair of KRK 703cs that a friend has loaned me until I switch over to an Adam system.

He gave me an old Carver M-0.5t (which seems to have a load of power) to use with them, and I fired them up and they sound like they have a sock over them.

Any tips on mixing on these things from anyone familiar with them?

Thanks
TH

As far as the KRK 703's go. I would guess that the C stands for the Clearmountain mod that they did after they started making them. It was basically two posts on the back in addition to the normal speaker binding posts that put a HF pad or roll off in the tweeter to make them a bit less bright than they were made to be. I had a pair for 10 years and loved them except for the shy bass end. I would check for the pad and see if it is wired in. If not then I would go to the tweeters and see if they are worn or fried. If they haven't been replaced in the last few years and they have been used regularly then they are most likely tired. You could find replacements from Focal or from KRK if your lucky, but if your just borrowing them then it is not worth it.

Also before trying to replace the tweeters try and find a different amp. I always used a Bryston 4b with mine and they were tight and clean and very clear. When I would use them with a Hafler 500 they sounded like loose muddy crap. I would imagine that the Carver would be the same or much much worse.

Good luck,
Michael Greene
