| Lives for gear | My friend's studio. It's getting good!
A friend of mine, Taylor Barefoot, started a studio about 6 years ago. For the first 2-3 years I helped him build it from the ground up (everything from figuring out how to buy everything and not go broke to painting and wiring up systems). I still go by occasionally and record, but I've been blown away by recent expansions and how huge its gotten. It has a 16-25ft control room 16-25 main live room two 16x8 Iso rooms 4x6 vocal booth. (or around that). We put in wood flooring in most of the studio recently, which is pretty nice. There's a baby grand piano, a hammond M3 w/leslie, Korg hammond-like keyboard, Moog Voyager, and Alesis Ion to round out the keyboards. Monitoring is by NHT with A-10/B-20's. Then there's a guitar collection from heaven that I can't keep track of. Handful of solid basses. Every guitar amp you'd ever want, including a handwired Vox AC15 made for Joe Perry, a real vintage Plexi, a 63 Bassman, a a Gabriel, and about 10 more amps. Two nice drumkits, including a Pork Pie (new one is Ludwig?). And around 40 guitar pedals, all high end. HD system with Apogee convertors, JH-24 for tape, 3 section Procontrol, and some killer outboard. Solid mic collection. Nothing esoteric, but everything you'd want. These photos are during a 'construction' day (adding windows to new ISO rooms), so everything is a mess, but I'm likely going in on Saturday morning to do a bit of mixing. I'm just excited to be able to book at a studio like this any time I want. Business is good, and clients are loving it.

| Lives for gear | There's a significant chance that it's going to get about 3x better soon. Have to see how this one business deal goes. BTW all, Taylor is pretty open to freelancers who are good/reputable coming in and using the studio. Hit me up and I can put you in touch. I don't have any photos of the back room yet, as when I was there the floors were still being put in and the paint was wet on the walls. When I'm in next I'll take more photos. I wish I had a better description of all of those guitars, but most are vintage/rare, but all meant to be played. The Jazzmaster is a 59' I think, but a refin. I haven't ever been in a studio with a better guitar collection ever. Taylor basically has made it his life goal to always have the best guitars available to man and he's owned in excess of 250 guitars over 20 years. |

i just finished a tracking session in this room. his collection of gear is just so fun... gabriel v18.... so much high end it is beyond belief. 8x gama pres is like a total dream. the new back room sounds really cool. total of 3 isos and one decent sized live room, there aren't that many studios in boston that can offer that, plus his gear collection and a really awesome price point. PM for details. |

I like the sm7 AND the royer on that cab. I like a ribbon and the sm7 on guitars, sounds awesome. I personally use an AEA R92 with the sm7, but the sound of the 2 blended is amazing. Love it!!

I've worked in this studio for 3+ years now with great results. It sort of become my home away from home, I've actually have brought all my home studio gear here. My friend and I installed all the hardwood floors as well as built the expansion of the two rooms. Right now we are working on getting some new goodies... Neve Summing Buss... yes! Taylor (owner) is a great dude and has help me get a start in this industry. Looking to track guitars in BOSTON? Go here....

I knew Taylor was going for a summing bus soon. Oh the insanity. I can't keep up with the equipment in there, at all. It keeps rotating and getting more awesome every week. I can't think of ANYWHERE in Boston or New England outside perhaps Joe Perry's house that would have a better guitar collection. I should have bought so many guitar from him. Still wish I'd gotten the 64' 330-TDC, the purple MJ Mirage and the 68' Tele when I had a chance. The only debate I have constantly in there is if I want to play the AC15 or the Gabriel. I need to convince Taylor to get one of the Michael Wagener guitar splitter/reamp devices at some point.

HI DAVE, how goes it? I love the Gabriel. That amp is sooo nice sounding. The AC15 is cool to, but its kind of hit or miss for me. If you get a chance come and play the Matchless DC-30. I think he had it re-tubed recently and MAN, does that thing sound wonderful! Definitely my "amp of the month". As far as gear goes... I've been pushing him on the summing idea for a while nice and once the money is in, I'm pretty sure he is gonna pull the trigger! I've been brainstorming ways to make the headphones distribution system a little better. Thinking about a Furman HDS-16 or the cheaper hear Back Four Pack. Oh yeah, he just bough a cool slide guitar! As always this monster is growing by the week! |

The DC-30's never got me going in the way that they should. They fit Taylor's playing a lot better than they fit mine. The one amp that I seriously mourn him selling years ago was a 1963 Selmer Zodiac. I have never heard a tremolo like that before or since. Kinda how the Magnatone in there has its own 'special' vibrato that nothing else can touch. Still need to get my ass working on those pedal clones that I was making for him. So many germanium transistors laying around going to waste. Moving into a new house soon that I'll have a full workshop in, so much gear will be made!

Now my mind is thinking of all the gear he's been through in the past 10 years. Several consoles (Panasonic Ramsa DA-7, Amek TAC Scorpion, Otari Status 18-R), ~200 guitars (at least), ~50 amps, probably 150 pedals. We had two 1/4" 2-track machines in there at one point that I was doing tape-restoration/transfer stuff on. I think there have been at least 3 protools LE rigs in his studios (mine, paul's and Taylor's original 001), his old MIX system, and now his pretty big HD system. It's pretty insane. I think the only thing he's never has had is a real modular synth in there (unless Brian brought one at some point and I missed it) |
