room matters HUGELY. So does kit and tuning well as the balance of the player. The single mic' stuff was the early tuff BTW.

You'll need at least one kick mic and one overhead.

You should search the forum.
Here is a thread from the drums forum.

It answers some of your questions.
Read post#13 and #15.

Towards the end of the Beatles they were micing all the toms from the bottom. I agree that the room is huge, and, having a dynamic drummer. Say what you want, Ringo knew how to be quiet and loud.

early beatles (normal smith) - (2) mics - stc 4033 kick & stc 4038 overhead

mid-early beatles (normal smith) - (2) mics - akg d20 kick & stc 4038 overhead

mid-late beatles (geoff e) - (3) mics - akg d20 kick, KM54 under snare & akg d19 overhead

mid-late beatles (geoff e) - (6) mics - akg d20 kick, km54 under snare, hat/tom/floor premixed, akg d19 overhead

late beatles - replaced U67 as overhead.

the above is more/less in the ballpark - others may have more detailed info...

although Studio 2 is a large room (review recent thread on Oasis' new album recorded at AR) - points out that it was not an overly ambient room.

also - don't dismiss the REDD tube console & impedance requirements of EMI gear... even 3rd party components were modified to fit EMI requirements.

lastly - TAPE!! 1 inch 4 track - 1/4" per track... and tube summing when making reductions.

and can't leave out Ringo ( don't send him anymore fan mail ) - if you've had the chance to listen to isolated tracks from classic beatles recordings - it's worth mentioning that he knew how use dynamics.
