the ultimate mic mod collection?

I know mic mods get talked about a lot on these forums. A lot of people swear certain mods make a cheaper mic stand up to some very high end mics. Just wondering what the "best" mods are. Which ones are really worth it?

Two things I'm lacking and really want are a really nice pencil condenser and a good tube mic. Im interested in all mods though.

So please let me know what your favorite mod is and how it blew your mind.

I'm not interested in mods that made a terrible mic sound good. I want mods that made a good(or mediocre) mic sound awesome.

Have a surfaround on the prodigy forum. Lots of info there and helpful people that know a lot. From personal experience the Gyraf G7 build is a great tube LDC given you use good parts. Not a mod but good as, if you buy a cheap chinese mic as housing......

I used an M7 type capsule from Dale Ulan on prodigy and a Sowter 3678 transformer inside a lengthened Nady 1050 running various tubes. GREAT mic! Check Ben from Beezneez mics ('mics' here on slutz) for capsules, or Peluso, Blue, MBHO....bla bla....it's a little learning endeavour, but thoroughly recommended!! Have fun!

Search this forum or pm him. His name is 'mics' on here.....friendly chap he is. Not having tried his produce i do however get the distinct impression he's a 'top-quality-only' man. Also has good parts, capacitors and such.....

I had a lot of success with my Karma K55 mod (tube upgrade, audio path component upgrade, Gotham audio 7-pin cable) it was nice!
The last session I used it on, it beat out a Soundelux U95 for main vocals
and regularly was picked over U87s and Soundelux 195's.

I sold it to pay for the parts of a pair of G7's I'm building.

Hi there, just saw this thread thought i'd better chime in. I would be glad to help anyone here that needs either advice, parts, mods etc etc.

I've been modding mics for a very long time and it is a great way to get what you want at a price you can afford.

I have noticed that there are many people around the forums that are looking for Great sound on a budget. I am going to start a new directory in my website called mods. i will have there parts, ideas and complete modded mics.

I will keep the modded mics to 3 or 4 different models and sell them at great prices. The modded mic will come as a complete package inc mount, cables, case etc. They will have my handbuilt capsule, Nos Tubes, cinemag transformers and all point to point.

Feel free to contact me at any time, and don't stress, i am always happy to chinwag (chat) in fact i am sure that many of you will struggle to shut me up once you get me going on mics.

cheers

Fantastic! I am seriously considering this G7 project. I just want to make sure it is the right one. I like the budget part but at the same time I don't want compromise. I want nothing short of an amazing mic when its done and have no problem paying for premium parts if they are worth it.

I also want to make sure the G7 is really one of the best DIY mics out there. Haven't looked into much else yet. I don't have much of an electronics background but would be doing this with a friend who does, so both our brains together should make this happen!

Great idea on the mod directory! that would help a lot of people!

This is a Mic that i was thinking of making available either as a complete mic or as a kit for you all to build. It has a hand made K47b Capsule, CInemag 2480 Transformer, Sub-miniature Raytheon JAN NOS TUbe, Paper In Oil capacitors. Each and every component in the Mic I have hand selected to be the best of it's kind.

The price point will be very attractive to many. $799USD as a complete mic or $699USD as a kit.

It is a truly beautiful looking Mic.

What do you think??

Please give me some feedback.

I have the easiest way for you to sample, it is called a 30 day money back guarantee.

As far as actual audio samples, i will leave that to the first person to buy one. I will even pay them (by way of a $50 Discount) to sample and post.

If no one steps to teh plate to do this, then i guess i'll have to get off my hairy butt and get a few session muso's in to get it done.

Cheers

once modded do the oktavas hold their own? that price is very very cheap. With the mod can they stand up to much higher-end mics. Only experience I have with cheap SD condensers is the audiotechnica 4041s and they sound way to brittle and harsh to me to be useful for pretty much anything....btw. is there a mod for those I have 2 lying around I don't really use.

Id love to have a pair of really nice SD mics. and if that mod makes these mics sound reaaaaaaally nice then I'm in.

mics: I think your microphone sounds like a great idea, and I'm glad you are offering it as a kit as well as pre-built.

There are others that compete in this price range, but none that have this level of quality.

I'm NOT in the market for a new LDC, but this might just change that...

Thanks for that. The main reasons for the kit is that there are so many people that have a real desire to build something themselves, so i thought i could take the guesswork out of building a great mic.

There is nothing missing from this mic, every part is the best of the best, from the transformer to the capsule and every other component. If i was to sell this one through a distributor network, the end price would be around 2600, so by buying it direct, you save big.

Here are some samples for you to listen to. Mics were recorded using a motu 8pre. No eq or compression has been used on any tracks.

I must appologise for the vocalist as it is me and i'm not singer.

Heck... those all sound pretty good. You can sing, Ben. I like the warmth and lack of sibilance on the Jade... that's sweet.

Good voice Thank you very much for samples.Your mic has nicer highs than Peluso for sure.I prefer darker sounding mics so Neumann is the winner.I cannot say nothing more except audible pops with Neumann.Beesneez sounds good. Do you have acces for Audio Technica 4060?For me it would be the most significant comparison.I`m looking for mic which have similar or darker highs and is softer , more natural sounding. My types are Pearlman TM1 and Wunder CM7GT but if were convinced i would buy cheaper one. What about tube ? is it common tube? is there possibility to change freq responce or character with different tubes?

Feels like the Jade is nice and balanced with a healthy shovel of authority.

The Neumann sounds a bit like it doesn't like the impedance on the motu or something, as it feels a little darker than normal I think, still lovely though.

The Peluso lacks authority and has some annoyance factor in the top end.

Nice job, Ben!!! Very sweet! And amazing value!!

To my ear, all three mics sound distorted on transients. I would assume that is the Motu preamp? I think maybe lowering the gain on the pres and bringing up the level in the DAW will assist us in hearing these mics running with clean gain!
