Recommended George Massenburg productions?

I'd love to pick up some examples of some of George's finest work on CD... any style / genre ok. I'd love some recommendations. Lay it on me. Thanks!

Linda Ronstadt "Frenesi". George gave me a copy at my first AES show when I was a curious college student visiting his booth. It's an album of Latin music recorded with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Beautiful horns!!!!

Lyle Lovett "Joshua Judges Ruth." Possibly the best album ever recorded. Among one of the best, anyways.

Mary Chapin Carpenter "Time*Sex*Love"

The first post Lowell George Little Feat album "Let It Roll". Great production, and some great music too. The drums really snap.

The only post LG worth having.

And, in case you don't know Little Feat with Lowell George, you should do something about that immediately!

George is a brilliant engineer and I use his mixes and references many many times a year.
Check out TOTO the Seventh One. The drums on Mushanga are sonically amazing.
Any and all of the EW&F stuff is AMAZING!!!!!!!!

been on a Massenburg trip lately, here are some tips not mentioned yet:
- Jon Randall - walking among the living, down to earth country record, love it.
- Aaron Neville - warm your heart, really amazing sounding record, too bad I don't like half of the songs that much, but really an album you should check out.
- The toto seventh one stuff sure is amazing sonically

Heart Like A Wheel (the Linda Ronstadt release from the seventies) was at least mixed by GM aswell, sounds great!! (esp the track 'You're No Good').
I also love the album Cry Like A Rainstorm, Howl Like The Wind by Ronstadt, engineerd by GM.

Definitely Lyle Lovett - Joshua Judges Ruth.

"North Dakota" is one of my favorite all-time recordings.

Joshua Judges Ruth: controversial masterpiece

I wonder whether it haunts either George or Lyle that "JJR" is regarded as the zenith of both their bodies of work, given their subsequent falling out.

Each one has publicly characterized the other as being kinda insane.

But there's no doubt that they made magic together.

Acrimony can be the cradle of genius, I suppose.

Me, I wish they'd make a sequel.

I'm not holding my breath though...

I agree and me neither.

I know Dylan and Lanois didn't always get along either, but at least they reconvened. I think it started when Lanois told Dylan, "Go write another 'Blowing in the Wind'"

Mind you, that led Dylan to write Oh Mercy and Time out of mind, so challenging the artist from time to time is not bad!!

I think ultimately Dylan decided that he'd rather have a quiet life and be happy than work his ass off fighting with Lanois and make masterpieces.

Amen...

Add to that "She's Already Gone"... huge, open and those subterranean bass bombs are killer

I also love what he did with the last Subdude's album. Best stuff anyone has gotten out of them since they came out of retirement. The first two they did paled in comparison to the stuff they were doing here as side projects. When my friends go elsewhere I really want to hear my ass get kicked... thank you George for kicking my ass, I truly appreciate it.

If you don't mind the smooth jazz thing, Artist: Flim & the BB's; Album: New Pants. The fist song, Invention, is worth the price of admission. It's a favorite among piano sounds, and the mix will remind you why dynamics should be left in music.

His Earth Wind and Fire stuff is amazing, "In the Stone" around that time......

if you're into orchestra check out any of the Ronstadt records with Nelson Riddle, a great experience, he gets the orchestra sizzling in the treble without going overboard....

The latest Art Garfunkel is a nice record also, not something I listen to alot but I enjoy it none the less.

Did I mention Earth Wind and Fire?

oh yeah, and Earth Wind and Fire.

Production and engineering on Toto's Seventh is just out of this world.
Listening to that album again, couple of days ago, reminded me of just how high the standards were in those days.

Jennifer Warnes "Famous Blue Raincoat" = sonic perfection.

Lovett JJR is also a remarkable recording.

A few others:

Linda Ronstadt "Mas Canciones"
Randy Newman "Faust"
Weather Report "Night Passage"

Here's a great one:

Michael Ruff: Speaking in Melodies

Entire album recorded live to two track in the studio. Amazing work.

Not only in production, but also in songwriting, arrangements, and performance. The Seventh One is brilliant on all accounts. IMO, it's the last Toto album that sounded like Toto.

Gotta put another mark down for "Joshua, Judges, Ruth" as well. I was rather shocked to read in one of Massenburg's interviews that the sessions for that were not the most pleasant as Lyle and George didn't see eye to eye on the direction of that album... or something to that effect. Still a masterpiece to me, on both side of the console.
