I mean is that really important? Would this make you mix like CLA. No! I have done over 2 years different experiments with 2 Bus compression. I had a good 1178 clone as well as the Waves SSL Plug In and the UAD 1 33609. 1. Interesting in many cases I preferred a Plug In not the hardware. 2. Sometimes Bus compression was the wrong thing I mixed without. Equipment is just a bandage the cure is Know How. my two cents....... take what you like most and not the 2 Bus compressor which any famous mixer uses....this is the first step to find your personal mixing stile.....

i might be wrong, but i thought that CLA went without mix bus compression, and was more into slamming par comp/ bus compression.

![]() i've never prefered any software comp over the hardware in ANY case. especially not the 1176 or ssl buss compressor. that thing just sounds like garbage. the channel strips are ok.... and i agree about the mixing without compression part. sometimes that is what is best for the mix. ok, sorry to jump on your a##.... i have jury duty this week and am pissed!!!

David it was just a thought to give an impression about what I think about it. I always think new input is welcome. I dont would say garbage to the todays plug ins!! Many things can work or do not work and I am open minded. If I close my mind for the things of today I only can lose but not win.... |

I've read that Tom Lord-Alge uses the Focusrite 3 with 1-2dB of compression.

Top tier mixer's don't necessarily use the same mix buss compressor for every song. Sometimes you'll see them using an SSL, Smart, Focusrite Red 3 type of compressor... then other times a Fairchild... and sometimes a 33609... I could go on and on.

In your opinion would a SMART C2 get e there for the ssl thing? It sounds appealing to me because it can be used in tracking as well

I end up using the SSL X-logic on the mix bus and the Alan Smart C2 either on the drum sub with crush engaged or another stereo source like piano. I also sometimes use the Red 3 on the stereo bus with frees the SSL for other duties.

CLA has also spoken in interviews about hitting the SSL bus compressor. There's definitely a lot of SSL master buss compression going on with a lot of these top-tier rock mixers. |

I like the Smart C2 because it doesn't sound like an SSL buss comp so when you want something different & clean but similar its a nice choice. If you want the SSL buss comp sound for me you have to go and mix on the SSL console. To me the SSL glue falls short when i mix through the buss comp but not on the console. The glue is not just in the comp but in the sound of the console itself. The SSL buss compressor does have other good uses though like for parallel drums. With the right settings mixed under the drums it gives the drums a certain snap.

Don't forget to keep in mind that many of your favorite records were likely mixed with NO MIX BUS COMPRESSION as well. I think you'd be surprised at the list. |
