Thread Starter | Fall Out Boy on Autotune, Babyface and c-800
"And I haven't used it in 2 records, though Babyface uses Autotune as an effect. I actually think it's harder to sing through Autotune because it doesn't really allow for blues notes, so it's weird. It's really strange and weird to me. But here's the thing, for audiophiles, when we were recording with Babyface, I sang through a Sony C800 mic and they don't have any low end, and one of the things is that--I don't have perfect pitch, I hear relative pitch--and so if you don't have low end in your voice, you're not necessarily going to know in reference what the pitch is. I record on a 67 or 269, Neumann mics, and those have a lot more low end and I can hear my pitch reference a lot more. So basically when I'm comfortable, I don't use Autotune; when I'm in a new situation I might use Autotune. The other thing too is that in a lot of those situations, like the Babyface thing, we were arranging and recording a song in a day. It's all well and good when you have time to sing all that live, but when you have a day to write and record a song and think it's gonna be awesome, you might want to use Autotune." Wow, funny that this is from a website called Absolute Punk. Especially talk of Autotune and working with Babyface. That's about as un-punkrock as you can get. |

What could be more punk rock than being absolutely non-punk on a website called AbsolutePunk?
Likewise, what could be less punk rock than a website called AbsolutePunk?

I fail to see how someone could defend Autotune. It's like tracing or using a stencil. How inauthentic!

Maybe I'll catch some heat for this, but I love his vocals.
Glad to hear confirmation that they aren't autotuned...
I'm not a huge FOB fan or anything, but I'm a sucker for good pop songs and the last record had tons. I've been checking out the new singles and they're pretty cool. I think all of the vocal work is awesome. props to patrick.

I doubt you're going to find more than a few major label releases that aren't fully auto-tuned (or melodyned, whatever) - and definitely not any on modern rock radio.

i have no problem with tuning a vocal (or a bassline, as i've used autotune on more than once) as long as it's done to ease time and expense and not to fix someone who can't sing. it's easy to pick a vocal you really like, and hours after the singer leaves, as you're mixing, you notice one or two little things that are a bit out, and not in a cool neil young way. if you're going correcting a couple of small things that the vocalist is totally capable of, then no big deal. but creating a great performance out of a marginal one using just autotune is lame.
like, we all use techniques that are "cheating" in some sense of the word...like, no one in history has ever actually experienced in real life the sound of drum kit with close mics, overheads, compression, and EQ, so couldn't be considered "cheating" to accentuate certain bass drum freqencies while turning down others, creating a sound that sounds little like the original?
autotune should be used to fix small mistakes and minor blunders, not re-engineer and re-sing a bad vocal. but saying it's always bad in every instance and in every situation would be going a little far i think.
