Best 8 channel Mic Pre Box

Hey Guys..

Looking for opinions on best 8 channel - in one box Mic Pres.

I could do two API's 3124's or two Vintech Audio 473's,
But to prefer to have all eight Mic Pres in one box.

Anyone making an eight channel 1272 clone?

Also besides the Reso 873 is there anything with actual knobs?

Anyone use the DACS 8 Channel?

Focusrite OctoPre?

Try 8 channels of OSA MP1-L3's in one box...you won't need 1272's after that IMHO.

What about an eight space rack filled with Wunder PEQ-1´s.
Doesnt´get much better than this

In the clean & precise department the Grace 8x preamp is very good.

Cranesong Spider gives you clean and coloured and is an excellent converter.

check out the "shadow hills industries" mic pres at vintageking.com...go under new mic pres and you'll find them.

they're brand new. i ordered 8 channels and should have them any day. very versitile. you can switch between two different transformers or bypass the transformers altogher. i haven't heard them yet, but the word is that they are fantastic. i'll be sure to post my opinion when i get them (hopefully this week). i think these are definately worth a look....

shadow hills industries

If the Shadow Hills sound goods as good as advertised...
they might be the price winner @ $3450 from Vintage King...

Three types of Mic Pre (Stell or Nickel Transformer plus transformerless) !

Nathan, The Old School looks great too but eight channels would be $5400?

YOu could get an 8 channel N72 box from Seventh Circle Audio, if you wanted 8 channels of 1272 type pre.

I was going to suggest Millennia too, but ti sounds like he's going for that Neve-ish thing. I love mine. I have to 8 channel HV-3D too. Awesome.

That figure is a little less without the rack...there are a lot of preamps that cost more for eight channels (i.e. you mentioned 2 x 473's which is quite a bit more), and some that cost less. Remember, in 8 x MP1-L3's, there are 24 transformers (3 per preamp). Iron isn't cheap!!

WOW! Who cares what it sounds like, it is worth it for the look alone! I want one just to have in the rack for show.

I was going to suggest looking into these as well. I just got the Vintage King email today about them. They definately look very cool...hopefully they sound great too. Don't forget to let us know how they sound when you get them.

i'm rolling the dice a bit getting these (shadow hills) without using them first, but they come highly recommended from a friend at vintageking. the concept is exactly what i was looking for and the price for what im getting seems too good to be true.

i was looking for an 8 channel sidecar and was torn between something clean vs. colored. the shadow hills will give me both. the osa stuff is also a good option with the different style mic pres. after weeks of trying to get some osa stuff to demo with no luck i came accross the shadow hills stuff and had a chance to get in on the first batch. i hope he can keep the price point. it seems pretty low for what he is doing...(hand built, best switches, top notch power supply ect.......)....

im hoping to have my unit anyday and i'll be sure to post my initial opinion...but i will say that it usually takes me a long time to really know the piece of gear.

The Shadow Hills and the new UA mic pres have the switchable transformer option. More bang for the buck.

Mike,

There are a couple of reasons you weren't able to get a demo of OSA.

1) You insisted on going directly through the factory (which is in your town of Phoenix) instead of through us here in Florida. As I recall it was due to the fact that you didn't want to pay the shipping costs on the demo units that I have here to you (which is understandable, but there isn't any other way around it). They are made in Phoenix, but it's impossible to get them from there. Dale & OSA are not set up to do demonstrations or to loan out gear because they don't at all sell direct and all stock comes here to us. So that made it very difficult for him to even come up with anything for you to 'borrow'.

2) You weren't able to let us put a hold on your credit card, which is standard practice for demostration purposes, instead you wanted to give Dale something you owned as collatoral. Unfortunately, we aren't setup to do business like this.

Just wanted to let everyone know that there is no problem getting OSA demos, but logistically it needs to be FOB Origin via Florida.

i really really like the UA 8 channel. you can get a ton of sounds out of it, and they're all good IMO. the only better option would be 8 channels of API.

Damn! That Shadow Hills pre is so sexy looking I feel inclined to buy it flowers, take it to dinner and make wild and unrealistic promises to it . . . . just so I can get it to come home with me to do private and unmentionalble acts . . . . uuuhhhmm . . . I mean RECORDINGS with me!

i stated in the above thread that i had a little difficulty demoing the osa stuff. nathan was correct to point out that i was dealing with osa directly at a very very busy time. by trying to make things easier for everyone i made things a lot harder. if i had gone through atlas i would have had no problem....

with that said, i think osa stuff is great. he also had a line of eq's and compressors in the works that are going to great im sure....

the best.??..probably the Spider...with conversion
the Millennia HV3-8...probably the best if you want to sound like real instruments
the True-8...the best bang for the buck

Here's another vote for the True Precision 8. Not much to say about its sound, & lots of gain. The tracks it provides are clean enough to add color later on by re-amping. Adding color is lots easier than taking it away.

There are so many good 8 channel pres out there- it just depends on what kind of budget and sound (or lack of sound) you are looking for. Millennia and Grace will of course be great... Others have mentioned other pres that will give you more color. I can't comment on them as I haven't used them.

I did get a pretty extensive demo recently on the new UA 8 channel preamp and I was very impressed with what I heard. The transformer switching made for some good options on color and they certainly seemed clean enough (in terms of noise floor). It would definitely be something worth trying to get a demo of...

Not the "best" necessarily but...

FWIW, there's a guy on craiglist san francisco w/ a true precision 8 for $1750. Probably negotiable as I think it has been on there a while. Don't know what they go for new, but that seems like a decent deal.
