Inexpensive console-like ideas for DAW recording?

Does anybody have a good idea for monitoring the tracking session going into the DAW (mine Logic)?

Should I just get a Mackie console? Line Mixer with options?

Right now I am using the latency free monitoring software that comes with the RME FF800 (TotalMix) but wanting to be free from that if possible.

I use TotalMix hooked up to a HearBack system. Works brilliantly! If you need a way to feed headphone mixes to the musicians then you should look into the HearBack, Aviom, or Furman type systems.

It's not very complicated. Eight channels of my D/A converters feed directly into Hearback inputs 1-8 (on a Dsub connector). Using TotalMix I assign live inputs and the 2-mix playback to those eight channels. The musicians can fuss with their own levels. So drum overheads might be on 3-4, guitar on 5, bass on 6, clicks on 7 and 8, and then the stereo mix on 1-2.
