The Rutles

With all the talk about Beatles recording techniques on these forums it's worth remembering how ridiculously good these Neil Innes parodies were.

The Rutles

check out from about 2:30.

Oh I know the song writing is just funny but don't you think they really nailed the sound? Especially on the later John Lennon, psychedelic stuff. Apparently George Harrison was a good friend of Eric Idle and gave a lot of advice.

They're a great cure for "Beatley" songwriters.

Check out "Joe Public" if you can find it.

Fabulously funny.

Cheers.

The cod-psychedelic "Piggy in the Middle" is rather fab also.

And the film is hilarious. Innes and Idle are a scream as Lennon and McCartney. George Harrison makes a cameo. If I recall correctly, Neil was a member of The Bonzo Dog Band, who made an appearance in the "Magical Mystery Tour" short film. Don't know if he was still in the band at that time. I have all the Bonzo albums...

Well then, that makes at least two of us!

And for all you guitar heroes, let me recommend 'Canyons of Your Mind' - there's really nothing left to say after that.

Top this all off with a dollop of 'Magical Misery Tour' from the very talented Christopher Guest (a la Nat Lamp's Radio Dinner) and I do believe that we have a wiener.

The Rutles were bigger than God ....

Woops Sorry! I meant Rod!

Which is of course true because Rod Stewart's heyday was in the 70's not the 60's.

I remember when All You Need Is Cash was first shown and a guy at my school said he thought the Rutles would end up as popular as the Beatles! (when in fact they weren't as big as God, Rod or the Beatles.) I really love them though, Another Day is a great song in its own right.

The little interview bit with Brian's mother, where she talks about the trousers just cracks me up so bad.

That is an INCREDIBLE solo. Very very musical, in an unmusical kind of way...
