Your Favorite Mixes on Vinyl

No question about it, my favorite format to sit down and listen to. Most records sound much better on vinyl than on cd, but some really take you to another world.

My favorites are
Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond
Morbid Angel - Covenant
Queen - Sheer Heart Attack

Mine are:

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (in original un-remastered form)
Radiohead - OK Computer
Kings of Convenience - Quiet is the New Loud

A couple days ago I bought Supertramp's "Breakfast in America". Not my favorite band/album of all time, but I sorta dig those guys. Anyway, WOW. The vinyl smokes the CD version, even through my crappy home rig.

And my girlfriend found a copy of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" single at a yard sale the other day. Again, wow. Sounds friggin' huge.

I've been buying vinyl for about a year now. Some sound so amazing, some not so much. Newly pressed vinyl is a crapshoot so far for me. I've had some really bad experiences buying new vinyl. The worst so far has been PJ Harvey's new one. Maybe I got one from the end of the run or something, 'cause it's unacceptably shitty sounding.

ANYWAY, here's my list of records that sound absolutely rich and massive:

Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
Talk Talk - Colour Of Spring
Eric Johnson - Tones
Fleetwood Mac - pick one from the Buckingham glory era...
Sting - Nothing Like The Sun
Peter Gabriel - So
and the biggest surprise was: David Lee Roth - Eat 'em and Smile!!! Don't laugh, it's scary how good it sounds on vinyl!

I love buying and listening to old vinyl, I'm an addict now, I have to go digging through record bins at least once a week to feel normal. Hmm, think I'll go on my lunch hour here in a few minutes.

PS: to keep it fair about new vinyl, my copy of Spoon's Girls Can Tell is awesome.

Ohh man, where to start.....

Just a few i can think of right now, stuff i've just listened to recently:

Dr. John "THe Night Tripper"
The Brothers Johnson "Look Out For #1"

There are a few record conventions and private sales happening around town but not many record stores left. I usually go for old stuff, not much new releases.

Lunchtime scores:

Beatles - White Album
Jackson Browne - Late For The Sky & The Pretender

which reminds me of another great vinyl mix: Running On Empty

Dr John's records are totally awesome on vinyl.

I also like High Tide - Sea Shanties rediculous.

Also AMY WINEHOUSE - back to black.. sounds really good.. it sounds like it was recorded to tape

I'll stick with some of the new albums I've gotten on Vinyl that stand out....

Sea Change - Beck
This album took on an entirely different life when I heard it on vinyl

Z - My Morning Jacket
recorded at Allaire Studio in Upstate NY (check out this studio if you haven't) it's just gushing with "vibe." Everything from a huge and epic to small and intimate

Sky Blue Sky - Wilco
I've heard that the vinyl version of this album was mastered specifically for vinyl. Just sounds amazing....not to mention the fact that the song writing isn't too shabby.

Armchair Apocrypha - Andrew Bird
Oh lord this guy can whistle like nobody's business!! Not to mention the fact that Dosh is on the whole album playing keys/drums/samples

In Your Honor - Foo Fighters
I was a bit skeptical when I first bought the album b/c it's a very produced album, but the translation to vinyl was VERY welcomed. Especially disc 2 (the acoustic one). Probably the best Foo out there.....

I've got tons more, but I figured I'd stay with the newer stuff....

Some great stuff in this thread, would love to get the Beck/Wilco/Foos..

I was wondering if there was a huge internet site like play.com or amazon.com that sold new vinyls for cheap? I did a search and ended up at vinyl.com but 35$ usa for a foo fighters record (I do understand supply/demand and therein lies this price I guess)? I accept that there probably isn't such a site but just asking on the off chance i'm missing out!

besides beatles...

- yes - close to the edge
a big +1 on talk talk - spirit of eden

truly amazing pieces of music.

- david bowie - alladin sane
- plaid - spokes ( electronics froms UKs Warp label)
- black sabbath - sabotage
- the smiths- the queen is dead
- sex pistols - never mind the bollocks

But in all honesty, it really depends on the release wether I prefer lp or cd.
I have some really good sounding cds that sound like sh*t on vinyl. Usually newer releases.(And yes, I have high quality needle/ phono / amp etc) Maybe thats why most of my vinyl faves are pre-90s?
And maybe a lot of the cd hatred comes from bad experiences with badly remastered reissues of 60/70/80s albums? I recently enjoyed some GREAT sounding cds of pre cd recordings where good mastering made the difference (?);
- Rudy van Gelders blue note reissues.
- La Belle Epoque- EMIs french girls 1965-1968 (remastered at Abbey Road)

or maybe my ears are screwed. dont want to hijack the thread. keep the lists coming.

Rush "2112"
Rush "A Farewell to Kings"
Rush "Hemispheres"

I've gone back to the Light Side of the Force. CDs are no longer an option.

I'm totally with you on the Wilco and AB. Check out Bryter Layter by Nick Drake too if you wanna be blown away.

I couldn't say which are my favorite mixes, but what always strikes me is how much better the original vinyl versions sounds than the remastered CD's (at least the earlier ones). If something was first recorded for vinyl and I can find it I'll always buy it in that format over CD's or MP3.
