Digi001 w/MOTU 2408 for 16 channels I/O

Anyone successfully running a MOTU2408 into a Digi001 via lightpipe for 16 channels of simultaneous I/O? I know I would have to install the MOTU 324 card in my mac too for the 2408 to work. I'd love for 16 channels in at once.

simply for an additional 8 channels going into protools. I figured between the 001 and the 2408 I could have 16 channels. Am I wrong?

more details, please...

are you just going line in for the first 8 into the 001, then line in to the 2408 and then lightpipe out into the 001?

Pro Tools will not work directly with the 2408 - it will only talk to Digidesign devices. (and only one at a time.) To get 16 simultaneous inputs to Pro Tools via the 001, you can use 8 analog ins and 8 digital ins on the ADAT input. To access the ADAT input, you just need an 8-channel analog to digital converter. While the MOTU 2408 can be used as a standalone converter (without using the PCI card), there are undoubtedly better options available. Some of which include preamps, if that's useful to you...

Oh that's interesting. I didn't know the Motu would do anything without the corresponding PCI324 card. I figured the 2408 would not work alone with protools. I just have a 2408 from an old nuendo system and a digi001. I figured I would try and run them together. Channels 1-8 direct outs from my console into the Digi001, 9-16 into the 2408, digi001 1-8 outputs into the tape/monitor in on my console, motu 2408 8 outputs into the channel 9-16 tape/monitor inputs on the console, connect the Digi 001 via it's cable to the computer and connect the MOTU2408 via the ADAT ins both to and from the Digi001. Are you sure I will not need the PCI324 card installed to operate the converters on the 2408?

Also, I know there are better options than both the Digi001 and the MOTU2408, but I already have them so I figured why not try and make them work together, ya know?

using a 2nd installed soundcard to route in, and then out and back into the 001 is asking for latency issues if you ask me. More hassle than it's worth.

If it works standalone, then just try it!

True, true...very good point. I did not think of that but more than likely it would slow things down a bit. Latency is the enemy!

Absolutely positive. You will have to play around with various settings on the MOTU, but the front-panel configuration buttons and LEDs are sufficient for the job. I have done quite a bit of work in a studio that uses an old 2408 to get 8 more D/A channels out of a 002, and we never had to connect it to a computer for any reason.

Yes, as stated above not only will it work without the PCI324 card, but it won't work with Pro Tools and the card.

I understand about using what you have. I had a 001 with PTLE.

Reaper is a very reasonable platform ($50) and worth much more. With it, as long as the 2 units have what they need to connect to the computer (cards/hardware/drivers) you can use them at the same time with Reaper. There are no hardware boundaries.

There is a $50 solution and you can demo it for free.

However, if you have $199 in addition to throw at the issue, you can have 4 ins and outs that will sonically dwarf your two units(especially the 001). Only a suggestion since it is so reasonable.

Ok, I won't mention buing hardware again (I promise) but you ought to try the software solution as it is free to play with. If you have plugs and they are both RTAS and VST, they will be useable in Reaper.

If you want to stick with the 001 then the easiest way to get 16 in \ out is to connect an ADA8000 via the Digi's ADAT port. I know there's probably not a lot of love for any Behringer gear here but the ADA8000 converters are as good as the Digi's
I have both units in a mobile system for tracking 16 tracks in LE. Works flawlessly
