Noob Preamp Question Re: Solid State

Howdy folks

I have kind of a noobious question about preamps.

When tracking things like keyboards, synths, and drum machines, is there a reason to have some kind of solid state pre in the chain if you're getting enough gain going straight to your converters? I can understand when you want some kind of color, like from tubes, etc, but if you're just trying to get a clean translation? Is there any thought behind why you'd want a "transparent" pre, if there's no need to get more gain going in?

Thanks.

The choice probably depends on what pre's you have and what your source material is like...

I have a pair of GR-NV pre's and keys, drum machines etc benefit GREATLY from just running through them in my opinion.
Would I do the same thing if I only had a mackie board? probably not...
