Mackie Pre + M 160 Ribbon Mic?

Has anyone tried using Mackie pres with a Beyerdynamic M 160? Specifically: Onyx pres or the newer VLZ3 pres. Mainly I'm wondering if you find that you have enough gain available. I'd be micing a combo guitar amp (5 watt Laney,) and recording voiceover and lead vocals.

In the long term, I'd get myself something really nice for the 160. In the short term, the VLZ3 or Onyx are my only mic pre choices.

Thanks for any info.

Onyx pres have 60db of gain and it might not be sufficient for ribbons.
But you can also add more gain at fader/aux sections and the total maximum gain can be more than 85db (depends on which output you use). So it should be OK. Check out the manual which you can download from their site.

I'm with YUGA on this one. Don't know about the M160, but I tried using an Onyx with a few ribbons (Royer and RCA). I quickly went back to my other preamps.

/mostly due to quality of sound... just didn't seem to my ears like the Onyx liked those ribbon mics

Maybe the Mackie impedance isn't ideal for ribbons? Onyx is rated 2.4k, VLZ3 at 2.5k.

Beyerdynamic gives these specs for the 160:

Nominal output impedance: 200 ohm
Load Impedance: >1000Ohms

I'm pretty ignorant of how these numbers play out in the real world. Based on this, what would a 160 like to see, ideally?
