Drawmer MX 60 vs ??

thinking about a channel strip in my studio that has mic pre, comp, eq etc

i have an M5 pre right now but want to add something else that might bring some variation to my work

i mostly record myself, male vocal in a dave mathew style, along with acoustic guitar (taylor 314ce or yuri alvarez with AT 4040, or 4050 mics)

besides the 737 i was wondering what is in that price range that might be a better fit??

i saw this add for the drawmer and it is less than half and i was just wondering its rep, sound vs something like the 737

i was looking at a pendulum quartet but for the other things i want that is too expensive for me

thanks

I've been using an MX-60 for a few years and am quite happy with it. I have never been able to get any one to comment on it - must not be too popular. It's not the be-all or end-all to pre-amps but it is a very versatile box. You can use it as a pre and as a channel insert without re-patching it. I rarely use anything other than the compressor for tracking and then tweak the track after the fact if I want to e.q. or try the tube emulation. I recently picked up a GR 1NV which has taken on most of the load for tracking but will not totally replace the MX-60. I'd also like to add a Sytek for stereo acoustic guitar and overheads but even then I can think of a number of uses that would warrant keeping the MX-60. The compressor isn't bad, the e.q. is fairly musical, de-esser is certainly workable (though I don't use it much), and I don't really use the tube-emulation in my recordings but i've messed around with it and it sounds pretty good to me. All in all, for the price and versatility I think it's a pretty good choice.

hey thanks for that review

it seems like it is def worth trying out

i was looking at the GR also but isn't that just a pre?? i see there is a 2 NV where it is te pre and comp i think

if the Drawmer works out that would be great, save ALOT of money over the 737 and be able to get some other things i need

Carefull, saying the GR is just a pre might get you some hate mail around here.

It's a very detailed, great sounding pre-amp minus the bells and whistles of a channel strip. Since I almost always lightly compress vocals while tracking I had to add a RNC compressor which works real well as a team. GR also makes a very nice e.q. intended to work in conjunction with the pre-amp (or by itself) but the price per channel would be quite a bit more. I had the chance to A/B the MX-60 with the GR and there was no doubt that the GR was cleaner (with the option of grit by adjusting the gain stages), had more gain, and better detail. But like I said before, it didn't render the MX-60 useless, just seem to make a great combination.

I'm looking for the same thing. I've tried the Neve RND 5015H and the UA LA610MKII. So far the UA is the nicer one for voice, but the neve sounds nice on snare. Also on the list to try is the API Channel Strip - $2599.00 CDN. The Drawmer 1960 - $2450.00 CDN.
The Avalon 737 - $2299.00 CDN. The ELI-Mike E - $1649.00 CDN. and the Drawmer MX60 - $745.00 CDN. Obviously the Drawmer MX60 is attractive because of it's affordability but if the LA610 ends up sounding better I might have to go that way. This is a tough one for me 'cause I don't need one of these all the time, just when we track and that might be twice a year. And I do like the way a leveling amp controls the dynamics of Vocals on the way in. I find the vocals just sit in the mix better and need alot less messing with after the fact.
