Welcome to gearslutz and welcome to its best thread! Don't let anything anyone says about your tools get you down. Do the best you can with what you have.
The pro surfers that grew up surfing in Florida dominate the competition when they hit the California waves cause they're generally easier to surf. They're so used to having to work harder that they find the better quality waves easier to catch and ride.
Bear in mind that the #1 piece of equipment in the recording chain is the talent. I've never heard any listener say "This band sux cause I can tell they recorded with a behinger preamp. " Sure better tools are easier to work with and have their real advantages but keep plugging away. Be grateful for what you have and patiently earn stuff you need.
Also join in on the giving! A little good karma can only help!

Minor bump and a thought. To save us all trouble, I think Jules should make this thread a sticky. I mean, we're always bumping it to pg 1 one way or another, might as well make it pg 1 by default, right?

Just a thought.

Enjoy your Saturdays (those who it still is Saturday, the rest, enjoy your Sunday!)

Hmm...i'm not sure if this is the place for this, but I suppose it would not hurt to ask.

I participate in this activity called Drum Corps every summer. Basically its 150 brass and percussion musicians traveling a bus sleeping on gym floors and performing for crowds of 20,000+ for 3 months over the summer. Its quite an expensive activity (costs me roughly $3,000) to participate in.

That being said, i must do much fund raising to participate. If any of you would be willing or able to purchase a $10 raffle ticket (raffle is for $10,000) or make a donation of any sort (even $5 helps) please let me know! - for info on my corps check out this link

Sponsor me

Dat machine, miscellaneous

over the course of the past two years I had to sell pretty much everything I own to keep my two girls and I(and my wife) afloat while we went to school . My wife finally finished school, and I am at OSU working on a degree in Arabic Studies(I have a music degree which is pretty useless. )my school is paid for by the GI Bill.

My wife finally got hired (she is a dental hygenist) by the VA, so we had to pick up roots and move from NC to here(Ohio) for the Job. I am slowly piecing things back together. I am a stay at home dad, watching my two little girls while my wife works, and when she gets home, I leave for school, and am gone from 530 or so until 10 at night, and all day saturday.. I am a firm believer in the **parents** watching their own children if at all possible. I am, god willing, planning to get back in the swing of things full time once my college schedule evens out a bit. Recording wise, My focus is going to be on demos..there is a bustling music scene here, and although it is **VERY** different (more hard rock/garage oriented with a lot of hip hop.), i view it as a challenge and an opportunity, so I plan to be the first step in a band's recording career, with maybe more involvement down the road. I do have a little desk(a soundcraft 200b which ive modified, and an Otari 8 track) there are a lot of bands who aren't necessarily ready financially or maturity-wise for the costs of a *big place* so I hope to provide an environment where, more than anything, these guys can create and record ideas/demos...

so yeah. Hard is the fall. To go from owning a lot of stuff to owning nothing is, to say the least, humbling. All my sadness over parting with the gear melted one afternoon as my wife and I were throwing my oldest (I have two girls-- 9 months and 4 years)a pool party/barbeque. The party was belated as , at the time(the *actual* date of her birthday) we were flat broke. I had just hit a deer with our only car and spent every dime to get it fixed... anyway, I digress.. My daughter had been excited for several months about this particular bicycle she saw in Sears, and over that summer, I had made her a promise that she would have that bicycle for being such a great helper in the garden(we sold produce out of our garden to have formula money)..(you can see my wife and her business in this newsletter http://www.columbuscountyfarmersmark..._News_2009.pdf on page 4-- Roseland Farms

anyway, my selling of a lone AT4050 allowed us to get her that Bicycle, and throw her a nice pool party. it was at that point all the gear regret melted. I got so choked up that I had to leave( choked up because on one hand the feeling of pride for getting my little one what she wanted, on the other hand, I felt like a gigantic piece of trash for not providing like I should have been(even though I had work(as a personal trainer) it was only enough money to pay our rent, groceries..my wife made 100 bucks a month for her Army disabilty, which we used for gas. The job market there was just awful, unless you were a doctor, lawyer, or Agricultural Biotech(which is huge there because of it being a tobacco belt/cotton/corn producing area)

so, yeah, past couple of years were awful. but, thank God, about a week before my wife was set to re-enlist in the army, she got a letter from the Ohio VA saying that they wanted her to come interview. we were ready to go anywhere at that point.rHer interview and trial period/attachment were set to be the last 3 weeks of december(a terrible time! but you dont question uncle Sam!!))...again, pretty dire straits....dire straits because it was my youngest daughters first christmas, and we were all separated..aside from that we were broke(well, barely getting by) and fearful about what the future held. to sit in a living room full of kids and to see the look of hurt/questioning/and overwhelming sadness on your own children's face because they had nothing to speak of under the tree, and no mommy because she was away working..I felt about half an inch tall.

ANYWAY

im blabbing. to sum up, my wife got the job, we now live in Ohio. I am in school full time @ OSU in Arabic Studies and our family is happy. it kinds of stinks being away from family(in NC we lived within hollering distance of ALL my relatives as we all lived on the family farm/estate given to us all by my grandad)

but we have no extra dough,(single income from my wife's job and a little bit that I get as a housing stipend from the VA) and I have very , very little recording equipment. the bugaboo is that there are some really amazing, talented bands in columbus and I want to get them documented. I have a space, (a garage/shop that I am converting) , the desk, the tape machine and a total of 2 microphones. ( I just sold another couple to pay off our land tax in NC (I forgot we owed )

so if anyone has any junk you don't use, cables, anything... id be glad to put it to good use.

there is one final issue that looms large. several months ago I was diagnosed with a health condition, that, while fairly common(and in the early stages, very treatable) was not covered VA protocols(the army didnt give me the condition so why should they pay)..we were able to get coverage under my wife's Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan but the costs are astronomical...anyway, If I sound anything less than grateful, forgive me. I am so lucky and happy to be where i am. we have a roof over our head, food, and we are together.

at any rate, if any of you have things that you no longer use, no matter how cheap, broken or worthless it may seem to you, we can find a use for it. there are a lot of bands around here and I just want to get them recorded. I am not even doing it for money, just for love of music and desire to see these bands get music out there.

I have a decent amount of experience and a nice space that I am working hard to convert.. now I just need the stuff you have no use for anymore.

I will, of course return anything I get back to the GS coiffers once I am finished using.

so if you have any recording junk that you hate and cannot sell because it sucks so bad, ill gladly take it. **anything** , im just trying to get back up and running.

sorry for being long-winded. I am emotional when it comes to my family, music, and this health issue(which is harder on my girls than me...I know that because I can see the concern in my oldest one's big blue eyes as she asks me about it) ..and that is tough for me to see.

again, sorry for being longwinded... you know, 3 years ago, I had a nice mic collection by most standards I would say, several preamps.. and today, it is all gone. we aren't guaranteed anything in this life but life and death. be so please, please be grateful for what you have. make music. be happy. I learned a very big lesson..(well, several) the biggest being humility and grace.

Just got home from the show. If Imelda May isn't HUGE in america soon, I'll be very shocked. Best show I've seen in years. She's got the pipes, she's got the looks, she's got charisma to spare, and she's one of the nicest most geniune people I've ever had the privilege to work with.

Run do not walk to see Imelda if she's coming to your town.

g'night slutz!

I've been AWOL from this thread since August due to totally unforeseen and awesome circumstances (more later... ). But this morning I awoke to find a Friend Request from RBZ, which is one of the coolest ways to start a day!

I did have a synth that I was planning to give away here, but last week gave it to a close friend as she is just starting out recording her wonderful songs... I guess the all-seeing all-knowing omnipotent RBZ must have heard about this and was just saying Hi! It's good to see my namesake in his avatar!

So now I'll try and catch up reading this marvellous thread - OMG, I just realised that I'm only up to page 384, fuuck and you guys have blasted off to page 618!

Wow, amazing stuff really does happen! I posted that back in January 2009. In July 2009 I indeed met an amazing woman with reddish-brown shoulder-length hair and fell truly madly deeply in love for the first time in my life! And it's all down to this thread! So, the moral is, my friends: GIVE and YE SHALL RECEIVE!!!

I am a big fan of the quote:

Grace is when we get what we don't deserve. Mercy is when we don't get what we do deserve.

That you have managed to find humility in the middle of all, that is your life, is quite the accomplishment. I do hope things turn out as they're supposed to turn out for you and yours.

I have a lightly used Behringer MX 602 Mixer with it's own power supply, it has 2 ULN mic pres, and EQ (it's not great, but it works and provides a fairly clean signal). If it will fill a need, please PM your particulars to me. It's yours, if you can make use of it.

Oh almost forgot,

Good morning, all...

Well, I happen to have heard from a very reliable source...

That you, Mr. Goat, have a Heart of Gold.

So, the jig is up, Sir!

Damn. Busted.

Don't go spreadin' that around--I got a rep to maintain!

Aw, hell, since I've been accused of being a nice guy, I'd like to put a plug in for my favorite charity next time we do the Cherry Tree thing--Heifer International. Talk amongst yourselves...

Consider it done, you Old Goat! stike

Just as soon as the CherryTree thing that's about to begin (involving BeesNeez mics and a little girl named Phelicity) wraps up, we'll do it.

Guys, I don't know what is being said here right now because I am just jumping in here to let you know the tragic news:

My studio was destroyed in a horrible flood last night! Six inches of water took just about everything I own: brand new DW drum set, all my guitars (10) power amp to my Trident 65, etc. My wife and I worked our life off to get this studio where it was at up till last night!

My life has just changed for the worse and I am in shock and I don't know if I am going to make it out of this!

I can't write anymore as my heart is breaking and my tears are falling hard just like last nights flood...a full grown man crying like a baby!

I did a longer thread on high end with a few more details.

I don't know what to do dear friends...I just don't know what I am going to do! I need to sleep.
