Holy blap! 500 pages!

Sorry I've been so absent; been super busy at work, and had a lot of projects around the house... but here I am now!

I had the lovely opportunity to meet el mosca yesterday when he came over to pick up the pandeiro which I've been holding for him; we finally met up at my in-laws place and he gave us a demonstration of what the damn thing is actually for, which pleased us and scared the heck out of the dog! Hah!

I also just got a nice note from an old friend who I gave a minifridge to recently... good vibes are everywhere!

Fun story for you:

I took my youth group on a retreat this weekend. Our theme was "GO," which stood for love God, love Others. During one of my lessons, I referred to a verse in Philippians that encourages people to "do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others over yourselves." I discussed how that verse is easy to talk about on a retreat, but hard to actually live out in the real world. To demonstrate that, we offered the kids a $100 bill and told them that they could decide who got to take it home. The only catch was that they had to come to a unanimous decision, and that they had to be able to tell me how their decision making process followed that verse. All the adults left the room to allow the kids to work out their decision. Then, about 15 minutes later, the kids came and got me to let me know that they had come to a decision. They had unanimously decided to give the money to an inner city mission that our youth group volunteers at once a month. I was so proud of them! Middle school and high school kids are offered $100 and they decide to give it away.

I thought that story might fit well with our little discussion board and brighten someone's day.

Old pizza is a staple here, same with leftover chinese food my friends bring back when they go out to eat (while I pay off loans lol). Can't forget the ramen pb&j (use 2 ramens and put pb&j on it), it comes out cheaper than bread if you buy in bulk and there are always people with free pb&j they aren't using (just watch your sodium count) . The best thing is it never tastes that bad because you always feel adventurous doing it (and it's cheap... that always makes things taste better).

Happy Birthday Pan!!!!!

now, I love cake, but you would have to stomp on that cake first to get me to eat any of it. I love the fact that Pan loves spiders, makes me feel like there's some balance in the universe for my irrational fear...

Hello Kinetic!!!!!
It was great meeting you, your lovely wife and the in-laws on Saturday. Too bad it was a short one, but such were the logistics of the evening. And of course, I'm very sorry that I scared the dog.

Also, of course, thank you so much for your generosity and your persistence (this giveaway took some weeks, because of both of our busy schedules).

The pandeiro is working great. The other item you gave me (the wooden slat "accordion") was -as you know- wound a bit tight. When I was trying to loosen up the ties, the string broke off, so I got a lot of hours of fun ahead of me trying to figure out and recreate the weave.

A recap on my pandeiro story: I owned, as I mentioned before, two pandeiros that are definitely "low-end." I've been on a quest for a deeper sound than I could get from synthetic heads for months. A friend promised to bring me one from Brazil, and another friend was going to start building the things to sell. I had two natural-skin pandeiros in the stars, when I saw kineticturtle's offer of a third one. September and October came and went, and it was impossible for me to drive down to the Valley to pick up any of these drums.

Two weekends ago, there finally was a chance for me to drive down to San Jose to hang out with old friends, so I made two pickups then: The free one from Bahia and the one my friend the builder finally finished. The free pandeiro is definitely another low-end item, but playable nonetheless (you can even see the "Nestle" logo on one of the jingles, which I think adds to the low-end mistique). I also picked up a pandeiro (serial number 17) from my friend, the builder. Kineticturtle's offering completes the trifecta of natural-head pandeiros.

You may wonder why does a man need so many frame drums? Different textures is one of the answers, but the real reason I'm excited is because having five pandeiros will allow us to offer free Brazilian Percussion classes to the kids in the community!!!! Now, I can have up to four students following the teacher at the same time. This is the real good news and the reason I'm so grateful for these gifts.

Best,
++aldo

I'm with you, bro ! I quit smoking too, 4 months ago. It's really hard for yourself and everyone around you…, believe me, but, anyway, try to find the best reasons to keep out those f&@kin' cigarettes… it's not obvious, many times each day…

It's a really long run fight, yes, a FIGHT ! Nobody can imagine how addictive is tobacco !
I sincerely wish you the strongest mind, to embrace a new life, nothing less, and this is still available for me today, I don't feel in peace with that incredible addiction…
