Looking for a mono EQ to warp / shape sounds. $2000 Budget new/used

I make synthesizer based music with lots of drum machines and samples.

My main concern is tracking, in mono.

Besides warping sounds, I would also like the EQ to be great at drums, making kicks & snares more pronounced and full sounding.

I would mainly use the EQ for drums as my top priority, followed by synthesizer sounds. I wouldn't use the EQ in a mix or mastering situation. I just want to create the sounds I am after and get them into the computer and thats pretty much it.

I would love to own a Massive Passive, but unless I find a used one for around $2500, its not going to happen. Everything I have found is about $3000+.

How would the Lil Freq be for my goals? It seems pretty versatile and would work well in other areas besides shaping.

I have been shopping for a Great River ME-1NV and found a guy selling a ME-1NV and EQ-1NV for $2000 shipped! I have heard great things about the EQ-1NV for drums, but IYO do you think it would be a good choice for what I am after?

Thanks!

My fave drum EQ (that we mere mortals can afford) is the API 560.

I would go for the Lil Freq. This think this is one of the best EQ´s for the price.

I like the ideas about the 560. Of the eq's in the 500 series, the 560 is the one I would want to try the most. I remember reading a lot of good stuff regarding drums with those eq's.

Ed, I wish you had offered me one of those 560's. Being familiar with you're music I am wondering how you use 4 at once?

Nathen, Fletcher, have you guys tried the Freq yet? Thoughts?

I have a chance to get that and the ME-1NV together with the rack kit for $2000 shipped. The Me-1NV I really want, and I was thinking about getting the EQ-1NV. Decisions decisions.

I use 4 a once because I record everything stereo. Including drums. So I have a pair for my multiple layers of kicks and a pair for my multiple layers of snares & claps. Similar to the reson why I owned a 4 ch. transient designer. A pair for my kicks and a pair for my snares. I mean mono is cool. But sometimes Stereo is just way cooler. Don't believe the hype that all drum sounds have to be mono.

once again i haven't tried the above EQ's aside from the 560, but IMO, the API 560 is everything it is advertised to be and then some. And CHEAP (under $600 used)! Totally a killer EQ my favorite API module hands down, and I am a total lunchbox nut. PERFECT for any drum sounds, and all sorts of other things, bass, guitars, you name it. Super versatile, sometimes not the easiest to recall settings etc.....But a great tool. If you are looking for some severe mangling, maybe you should turn on that KSP8 you've got or look into getting something like a sherman filterbank.

If you really want to warp and shape sounds as you suggest, a proper parametric equaliser with sweep frequencies and Q controls might be a better choice than the 560, which is only a graphic EQ.

Can't help much with the EQ, as I'm looking myself, but...
If you decide not to go with that deal, can you pass it my way?

Sure thing! But I may just pull the trigger and do it. I said to the seller I would let him know sometime this evening since I didn't want to keep him waiting.

I am a lot closer to getting it than I was few hours ago since I found some mp3's of the eq and pre in action.

The 3rd mp3 is very nice! Its the eq-2nv ---> output of mp-2nv

I will definitely hook you up with the link if I don't grab em. I will also post here to say if I did or didn't.

Ed, thanks for breakin it down for me.

I hear what you are saying about the filter. I always wanted the filter bank and mutator. I use a mod max filter by studio electronics that I love a lot. If I had known I was going to get laid off I would have had a filter bank a long time ago.

Tim
Thanks for the suggestion

Don't forget the Dakings. The eq's on that are very good for sculpting drums and you get a good drum pre thrown in. 560's also do indeed rock.

Got to love Tims nice and polite ways!
I would suggest a Buzz MPE1.1 with xformer output option! $1.4k list excl. xformer option.

The GR eq is defenetly a nice one too.

once again i'm gonna reccomend the avedis e15s for drums and tracking you can get 2 of em for about 1900 but then you still need to buy the rack which will over budget you about 500 bucks or so but then you still have more space to add more eqs comps and pres. the avedis rock!!!!

Man, the more I think about the Daking, the more I want one. I had never heard of the MPE-1.1 before, but that looks really nice! Thanks!
