RME DIGI9652 / Lavry Blue 2 channel AD/DA

can you use the RME 9652 card installed in a G4 with a lavry blue 2 channel AD/DA?

if so what is the cabling?

this is for
1)tracking in mono or stereo into logic 7.1 at 24bit/88.2k (including overdubbing)
2)monitoring "in the box" mixes of 4 to 15 tracks (24/88.2k).
3)playing back DVDs/quattro/waveburner/itunes etc (24/88.2, 24/96, 16/44.1)

this would basically be subbing the lavry for the RME ADI-8 DS (which has been working FLAWLESSLY for the last 2 years by the way, just looking for better sonics and i only use 2 channels of A/D or D/A at a time ever so....)

i know this is an "older" style card which is why i have to clear this up.

thanks for any info.
eli

ps i know dan has his own forum. just asking here because i've gotten good info here before.

There are two ways to do this, and it depends on if you want to utilize the lightpipe or SPDIF.

SPDIF - you'll need two Canare 110ohm to 75 ohm transformer adapters (one for each stereo A/D, one for each D/A). The adapters use BNC connections, so you'll need BNC to AES, and BNC to SPDIF. Since the 9652 only has one stereo SPDIF i/o, the above is all it will handle.

ADAT lightpipe - You'll need to get something like an Alesis AI-4 (not an AI-3). It's 8 channels of AES to ADAT lightpipe, in and out both ways. There is no degradation that I can detect from this unit, I've done the listening to verify and use it myself.

does it really matter which method is employed?

if so, why?

and what is the cost for either option?

thanks

To be honest, I don't think that's true. I used to have a HDSP 9652 and now have a RME Fireface, both use the same connections for the SPDIF. If you read in the manual, it can accept AES signals through the SPDIF connection. They also suggest you just buy/make a cable that goes from XLR (AES) to RCA (SPDIF). I bought mine from http://www.lynxstudio.com/cables.html

Now if the newer HDSP 9652 is the reason it can accept this this then you might be out of luck with my answer, but look in the manual. It'll say whether this will work because it's pretty clear in my manual that you just need the cable and not the transformer.

I just looked at the manual and it's worded exactly how the newer one is.
"Hammerfall accepts the commonly used digital audio formats, SPDIF and AES/EBU. To receive signals in AES/EBU format, an adapter cable is required. Pins 2 and 3 of a female XLR plug are connected individually to the two pins of a phono
plug. The cable shielding is only connected to pin 1 of the XLR - not to the phono plug."

I do exactly this with my Lavry to my Fireface and it works and sounds great.

The problem being is that it is 75 ohms on the SPDIF. I'm a little skeptical running a 110 ohm cable into a 75 ohm connection that is 'supposed' to accept AES. And I've never been able to be given a proper explanation for this from the factory.

thanks for that angle!! i will try the cheap and easy method first. if that fails i can try the more elaborate way. as soon as i take the plunge on the lavry i will contact lynx studios....

should be quite the sonic upgrade from RME to lavry for A/D and D/A
