The floor tom is farting ... The 12 inch rack is kinda doing the same. Snare is a little off. |

If you were near Memphis I'd swing by and help you out. It could be a couple of different things. My main rule for tuning drums is the top head controls the attack and the bottom head controls the resonance. If the initial attack sounds fine and the resonance is causing said farting sound then the bottom head is probably too loose. Usually that type of sound is caused by some kind of wrinkle in the head sometimes, it could be something else, but I personally wouldn't know what it is without being there. usually I'll tighten to top head up sort of tight and get a good solid attack and then raise the bottom head so that it just gets out all of the wrinkles, then see what it sounds like, and then adjust to taste. Does this help at all? -- Ben

Start tightening the bottom skin of the floor tom. If that doesn't help then try dampening it with a pack of cigarettes, moon gel, or anything that is absorbant. If that doesn't work, remove the bottom head and make sure that is where the problem is coming from. If THAT still doesn't work, then it's time to get a new skin, which I imagine is part of the emergency on a Sunday. Best of luck to you!! |

longtime drummer here... this video helps.. moon gel is good for ringing and stuff like that. get some good new heads. if the hoops have lost their round they should be replaced. as well as drums that have lost their round. YouTube - Dave Weckl - tuning drums
