Big Bottom References?

What are some of your favorite songs/albums to use to reference the low end of your mixes? I'm trying to compile some reference material with big kick drums and fat bass lines (both acoustic and electronic). Low end that is mixed in just the right proportions, is tight, and big. Any suggestions?

thanks

Check Sting's 'Brand New Day'. Available on both CD and SACD. Some huge bass on there. Room shaking bass.

A few that pop into my mind at the moment are Soul Coughing's Super Bon Bon, Meshelle N'Degnecello's 2nd album (the one with the bluish cover - forget the name) and the two albums, but especially the first, from The Getaway People.

The last Chevelle disk, mixed by the master AW...

Although very loud mastered, still it has huge bottom, fat kick and good dynamics. It's my reference for modern rock...

Greetings,
Dirk

Anything Parlament Funkadelic when Bootsy was playing. I LOVE the sound of the low end on the whole album of DR. Funkenstien. Kick, bass, everything sounds exactly as it should to my ears.

I produce and mix a lot of rock and metal and my favorite low end songs are from the country genre. Very clear, tight and focused, but still big.

Here are a couple...

Deanna Carter - We Danced Anyway
Tim McGraw - Just to See You Smile

Absolutely flawless low end.

"Up Er Mei" from James Taylor's Hourglass has always been a low-end favourite for me.

Bottom end

"Come Together" by the Beatles on their Abbey Road CD is a great one for finding something close to a maximum bass level you can get away with. Its VERY interesting to compare the version on Abbey Road with the take 1 version on Anthology 3. The bass on take one from Anthology 3 has almost no processing but the Abbey Road CD version has generous eq and compression (presumably from the EMI solid state TG1234 board). "Penny Lane" is another track with great bass. With Penny Lane, I believe the bass was recorded last and Geoff Emerick used a C12 as a room mic to make it sound bigger. "Rain" also has amazing bass, where Geoff Emerick used a speaker as a mic to add more bass. Its also worth mentioning that Paul used the Rickenbacker 4001 (with flat wounds) for all 3 of these. Just amazing playing and great low end.

And from the heavier camp:

Sepultura "Roots" - the track "straight hate" is a great test for studio speakers. Just on the edge of too much.

Weedeater "God luck and good speed" - Too much sub bass for a well designed monitor/room combination to withstand. Very useful reference when checking out studios.

Lou Reed "Hudson River Wind Meditations" - i think it's the first track on the album ("move your heart"?) that has low bass sine waves. A real work out for woofers and subs.
