NIN-With teeth

Just got my copy of the new Nine Inch Nails album which I've been waiting for in anticipation for a while now. Got it on the monitors now having my first listen. Any fellow NIN fans willing to share opinions on it. (I'm only up to track 2 at the moment)

Yeah it sucks.

Very dissapointing.

It sounds like Trent Reznor doing covers of Trent Reznor(sorry Trent).

My favorite tracks are the cheesy dance track and the last track.

He has a track in there also that's very Talking Headish which has potential.

Everything else in the middle of the records sounds like fillers.

I heard this was supposed to be more Rock oriented but where is the Rock?

Soundwise it lacks Alan Moulder's touches alot.

Lets face it...

The Fragile was his pinnacle, a great one at that.

Anything coming after compared to it will pale in comparison.

But Trent come on!!

OK, up to track 7 now, still waiting for the rock. I like the sense of space so far without countless overdubs on everything.

If you don't like it you could always make it better...... Trent released all of the Loops for one song on his website...

Been a NIN fan since Pretty hate machine. I've always liked that album the most, but I agree that The Fragile is his best produced album, and Hurt being his best track.
Haven't heard his new album though but I guess I'm one of those who hope that it's not rock'ier

OK listened to it a couple of times now and it's growing on me, wasn't the "rock" album I was expecting but I think I'm digging it. Funny, release date on the website says the 3rd but it was in the record store on Sunday. I guess being in Australia 'm almost a day ahead of the US as well.

The first thing that struck me was that the vocals came in so early on the first track (about 4 secs in) that I thought I had accidentally started on track 2. Trent is sounding a lot more confident in the yodelling department.

yeah i think his vocals are definetely more confident on this record. despite some negative reviews, i'm pretty into this record. i think it has some cool characteristics and definetely in my opinion sounds more developed in the song structure area. but i know some of my friends disagree. its just one that i think will grow on people. if i recall right, i think it was the same for fragile for a lot of my friends. it didn't start out being the amazing record that people see it as now.

I love it, I've had a promo for a little while now and I'm really into it. I think when people say more "rock" they mean just more singy and chorusy which it definately is - still some good synth-work and sounds though just less of the focus.
Man I love "Only", great track, it's like "Down In It" meets "Once In A Lifetime", with a serious Motown groove. Good stuff!

Disappointed

Another fan here and I agree with most of you... What the hell has he done.

I have listened to With Teeth and found myself skipping through most of it, which I know is perhaps not fair, but its incredibly un-inspiring and boring crap.

I personaly think this is the worst record he's ever done and the general consensus around me is ithat t might be alright if it wasnt NIN.

Some think he peaked at PHM, but for me it was D/Sprial, Fragile was great but it still had it's weaknesses.

It's all a shame really and it's another example of why I have left guitary based music behind.

Like all NIN tracks, the more times you hear it, the more you hear in it. It's a great record with lots of interesting pieces throughout.

I'd never expect Trent to duplicate a record so I'm happy with the direction and songs. It's all good stuff and I think we'll see some opinions change over time.

I was hoping for something MORE guitar orientated like "Broken" which I absolutely love.

Hi ya'all,

I was really disappointed when I first heard "The hand that feeds" 3 weeks ago, but I'm getting used to it. The album doesn't have the striking beauty of "the fragile" but I'm sure it'll be considered a good album in the long run.

Giving away parts of a song is a great idea, very generous!
We'll see where this experiment goes, but I'm definitely going to remix it!

Cheers,

Tom VDH

"I'm getting used to it"....

I've heard that a few times now about this album. I can't seem to get used to
uninspired music.

I'd like to hear Trent scrap everything except the piano parts and do an entire album of depressing ballads. That would rock way more than this album.

DVD-A

Anyone having problems playing the DVD-A portion of the dual-disc? I can play the CD side, the DVD-V video, and the Dolby 5.1 mixes, but the DVD-A (surround and stereo) play the tracks, but have no output.

I didn't have any problem with the Downward Spiral dual-disc. Could it be the FBI copy protection?

OMF file

Any Logic users want to be nice, and export an OMF version of the "Hand that feeds you" garage band file for a Cubase Sx user such as myself, I'm really curious to check it out.

Thanks guys.

I've listened to it many times straight through at this point. I agree it grows on you.

But I feel the songs are great. I also like the production--the drums especially sound very well recorded (the live drums, not the samples ;) ).

Sometimes I feel that there is a certain...cynicism...that pervades technical message boards (as opposed to "fanboy" sites that have nothing but idol worship nonesense), but I think that if one puts this in the context of modern commercial major label music and his own output, "With Teeth" fits in nicely with his body of work, and is better than most of the crap out there the majors are shovelling.

I've learned with all the NIN works not to expect another Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, Downward Spiral or Fragile. That's what I think makes NIN (Trent Reznor) be a genius of music, all his works are totally different but they still sound like NIN. When I was waiting for the Downward Spiral I never thought it was going to sound like it sounded. The same with The Fragile. I expected another masterpiece of noisy-industrial-tortured music. What did we receive? The Fragile, a masterpiece of layered-organic music. And what happened the two times? My first reaction was to say... give me back the money, I don't want to throw my money with crap albums, but time made me understand and apreciate everything that sounds in a NIN album. And with "With Teeth" happens the same. It sounds strange to me, but I don't think as I used to. I love when an album makes me say... what the **** is this? Let me listen again to it. I like to see and understand the differences between all the other stuff I've heard. I don't like when "Meteora" is exactly the same as "Hybrid Theory"... That's is really very very boring.

Saludos.

Are you sure there is a DVD-A portion? Just because it's a "Dualdisc" doesn't mean it's got DVD-A on the DVD side. In fact, I didn't think any of the dualdisc's had DVD-A on them. I could be wrong though.

The last song on the album is the best by far.
