Fav Surround mixes (DVD/DVD-A/SACD)

Anyone checked out surround enough to have any "reference" releases?

I don't have a DVD-A/SACD player yet (and I'm a little concerned about the future of either format-but I suppose that's a subject for another thread). So DVD releases would be helpful.

Thanks

Tim

Most DVD-A discs play on DVD-V players (the Dolby Digital 5.1 track), so go ahead and get DVD-A discs if you want them. DTS has some Surround CDs still available, but very few DVD-V music-only discs are around.

What kind of music are you thinking of? For rock, Beck Sea Change is a great surround mix, the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi is very adventurous, and Fleetwood Mac Rumours is probably one of the best balanced (front-to-back, center channel use, etc.). Diana Krall has a couple of great surround SA-CDs for jazz, and Telarc's classical SA-CDs are consistently reliable.

www.highfidelityreview.com is a great place for reviews.

So where are you guys buying DVD-audio Discs? It doesn't seem like the big retailers are stocking much.

Nickel Creek's self-titled release... the mix really opens up in surround!

I get pretty much all of my prerecorded stuff now from these 2 companies.

My current faves are Peter Gabriel's UP (SACD) and Crystal Method's Legion of Boom (DVD-A), which won some kind of award for its surround mix.

Don't wait any longer. Players that can play SACD and DVD-A are really cheap now. Too bad both formats have been a commercial failures -- that's no reason to deprive yourself.

It's usually the pop stuff that makes me go "wow", because the rear channels can be used in very creative ways. Classical stuff doesn't make me go "wow", it makes me go "ahh", as in "ahh, I can finally just listen to the music!"

Alison Krauss, "New Favorite" (SACD)
I don't care if you don't like Bluegrass, buy it anyway. If the opening track doesn't make your jaw drop, it must be wired shut.

Sting, "Brand New Day" (DVD-A)
Check out the swirling atmospherics on Desert Rose. So it was all sequenced in Logic? So what?

Arvo Paart, "De Profundis" (SACD)
Choral music in a cathedral, with organ and percussion. Hope your subwoofer's up to the task.

The Beck album is a really interesting case study, because the stereo mix seems to have been almost an afterthought. Listening to Sea Change in stereo, I was going "Why did I buy this? The songs are boring and I don't really like the guy's voice." Then I turned on the surround mix, and my whole impression changed to "Gee, this guy's really quite creative."

The SACD "Lovekraft" by the Supper Furry Animals has a fantastic 5.1 mix. Real talent at work there.

Others I like are "Yoshimi" by the Flaming lips and "Sea Change" by Beck, both by Elliot Scheiner I think.

Pioneer make a good universal player for under £200.
