TL Audio Mic Pre any good?

Anybody use to work on TL Audio Mic pre? (5001 or 5050 or Ivory 2 series)
I'd like to know the opion of you guys about the Sovtex 12AX7A tube in the signal path. Is that work on Voc.? What is the character of TL Audio sound signature?
Thanks in advance

The 5001 are definately not the cleanest and punchiest pres. Actually, they're quite noisy and "tube"-ish but I like them for fattening things up a bit.

Total Lousy Audio sound character: dull, muddy, noisy.
But hey - sometimes this is just what you need, not on vocals though...

Out of interest, does anyone know much about the TLA CLC1 Classic?

I have a U87. I was gonna get an Avalon 737 but its a little out of my price range. I was thinking about a Vintech 1073 but then I aint got money for a compressor. I do have a voicemaster pro. I could feed to signal from the vintech to the voicemasters compressor...or is that like pushing a diamon through a lump of turd???

I totally agree 100%...but, I only wanna use a light compression while tracking. So basically....is the quality of ya sound determind by the pre-amp mostly. Does the tracking compression affect the quality in any way?

I use a 5001 when I run out of good pre channels.
It is noisy, and the sound sucks on vocals....
On toms it's not so bad (low gain: less noise).
Planning on getting some better stuff tough.

I used the 5001 (mk1) +'57 for entire experimental recordings as seen here:

http://recforums.prosoundweb.com/ind...e6879255ff1356

or

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/showthread.php3?t=26753

Somewhere in there i posted some 'naked' drum samples using the same technique.......

For what it's worth, you probably won't find a more comprehensive demonstration of the 5001 (or the '57).

;-)

Depends on your definition of good.... I would say no by my definition, but if it's the only mic pre you have available then use it the best you can. Also, while TL Audio for the most part makes mostly mediocre gear, the VTC truly is a great sounding console.

Yes, I own one. Bought it about 9 years ago. It's crap. IMO
Steer well clear.

Completely and utterly useless piece of gear IMO. Save up the money and go for API or something.
And regarding the platinum Focusrite shit dfegad dfegad dfegad dfegad .

I bought one a few years ago, one channel was defective so I sent it back but while I had it here I plugged in the "good" channel. Wow...sorry...but I don't get it. Muddy shit came out and I was even happier it was going back. Possibly the grossest sounding preamp I've ever heard. Really dirty shit.

i'd pick ff platinum over tl audio allthetime (based on some limited exp. with twintrack pro, platinum is cold a bit, but TL sounds plain bad... can't help myself

C1 thing works somehow, but for the money? you could get some m-audio pre for the same results. Can't say anything about the compression, haven't try it.
