Add some noise to your signal. Consider using an expander too.

1) Try to train it to run a 4 minute mile
2) Introduce it to a nice girl (or a "not so nice" girl as the case may be)
3) If it gets along with the nice girl then it very well may pump up and down.

dont know for sure what you mean when you say " breath + pump " ... but i just woke up right now

take like a drumloop , and insert an comp ... do some serious gain reduction ...
so you defenatly hear the comps doing some ... like -10db or so .
then adjust the release to be as fast as possible ( full counterclockwise ) and it should " pump " like hell .
the attack now gives you the ability to control when the comp jumps in , so you either really kill f.ex the bass drum of a drumloop or you let it shine through if you slow down the attack ( clockwise ) . what ratio ? you´ll try yourself and listen what you like most .

clock& counterclockwise of course depend if the comps has some knobs working that way . there are some units working exactly the different way , like an 1176 etc .

lil bit confusing

good start for timing the comp to the material is using a delay chart ( if you know the tempo etc. ) .

good luck

but an real easy one .

If breath smell bad, use mint waxed dental floss

Sorry...

listen to a Chandler TG1 (Limit Mode) that's where you get you pumping and breathing ! Works very good on signal with lots room (think old Led Zep stuff)

The breathing you hear is partially due to the noise volume going up and down. If you add noise to signal, you can hear the gain of the compressor ducking as the signal hits the threashold.

You can use the expander to change the gain as the signal goes down. There is usually some kind of Hold function that will keep the expander from reducing the gain for a short time after the signal drops below the threashold. If the noise is only a little below this level, the noise will persist until the expander (or gate) starts to lower the gain.

If you have no noise or "hiss" to "pump", you would'nt hear the dynamics processing working as well. Usually, you don't want to hear it working....

Huh? Never heard of this one. What sort of noise are you suggesting one adds? pink? white?

Tim.

Walters,

Tiny's answer comes the closest to a serious explanation.

But you don't need to add noise because, for example, cymbals have a lot of broadband content that can give that sound. If you actually want to hear the sound of the compressor working, set the Attack Time as fast as possible, then adjust the Release Time from slow toward faster. At some point you'll notice the compressor becoming more "aggressive," and that's where the "pumping and breathing" become most noticeable.

This pretty much nails it, if you follow Fletcher's advice you might get to nail something else.

My Recordings/Credits

Slam a lot into it... (lots of threshold)

Set I high compression ratio,

And fast attack time

set a fast release time

Listen...

Mess with it some more... listen

You should be able to make it 'pump'

Unless it is a unit with a smooth compression or limiting characteristic.. in that case it may be hard to hear it..
