Lexicon LXP-5 - cutting in and out, what's most likely the problem?

Hey, I bought this "working" unit off of ebay, and it works. but when ever the effects are turned on, and the mix turned up, the effects cut in and out and create large popping sounds.

The dry signal though does not cut in and out, so when the effects cut out, I can still hear my guitar or whatever source I am using it.

The popping noise, seems to be pre effect as the popping has the effect on it such as delay, but when it cuts out it is complete silence. The popping occurs when the signal comes back in.

*edit*

The owner says it worked for him before he shipped it.

Does the red input level (overload) LED turn on at these mutes? Think sometimes these units could have problems with the supply voltage (wall wart). Especially if your line voltage is a bit low. Try it somewhere else, or with a different transformer (of the same voltage and type!).

Just a thought...

just a thought:

the LXPs are notorious for scratchy pots

usually it's the volume pot, though maybe on yours the mix control is bad somehow.

can you cause the popping occur by exercising the knobs?

Bingo! Or at least this is my bet, too... I used to use a couple of LXP-1's and it was the same way with those units... hit that red light, and the verb goes away - flip it over to another program, then back to the one you were on again, and it was as if nothing ever happened (if you used the little micro-LARC-type controller to do any parameter edits, you'd have to re-do those edits, as they would be lost, but the program would come back at its default state every time).

Just try running it not as hot on the inputs & see if that cures it.

Cool

I haven't thought about or seen a LXP-5 since I sold one on ebay 10 years ago!

Yer bringing back the memories...

I think I remember problems with the volume pot, as well.

Pots are usually pretty good on these, unlike ver. 7 China made LXP-1's with their Korean made Jung Pong pots that all are defective = scratchy sound.

Encoders are the usual problem, they wear out. Try cleaning them with a shot of non-residue electronic contact cleaner. You need to remove the 2 front screws and the one screw on the back panel as well as the jack hardware. Last resort is to solder them into the default position and use a Lexicon MRC to edit or to pilfer some from another LXP-1, 5 ,Reflex or Alex. Replacing them requires a good de-soldering tool and the skill to use it.

Thanks for the info guys.
The red LED doesn't turn on when it cuts out or pops.
