Hi Junkie

The Amek 9098 pre is clean and transparent. It uses a TLA( transformer like amplification) circuit.
It is not base on the neve 1073.

The Great River MP- NV offers more flexibility. Depending on how you drive the input and output gain, you can go from clean to colored.
The GR has a transformer built in.

Thumbs up

Thread,
I use both, the Amek 9098 and the Great River, mainly on female vocals. Both sound great.
To me the Amek is more creamy"more medium bass" and the Great River is cleaner has more air.
Right now my favorite pre on female vocals is the vintech x73.

hope that helps

Dick

I had the 9098 and it sounded odd to me. Almost like a spongyness to it.

i have both Great River MPNV2 and an Amek CIB. I use both lots. i find the CIB to be a little more "hifi", in the sense that it sounds more "modern", perhaps "cleaner" and more "transparent". notice that i add quotation marks around all the adjectives. The GR can also be wonderfully "hifi", but i tend to push it more to get it's "thunderous" flavor. i use the GR more often, and note that it is a dual pre so it gets used alot for overheads etc... the CIB is mono. the CIB seems to like being paired with my ribbons (royer 121, aea r84).

i like the CIB compressor in MM mode, and the eq is good but i hardly ever use eq.

the trouble is, describing this stuff in words is like trying to describe colors. you have to have ears and hear it against what you are looking for. the only help is that if you read 25 people saying that they love something, you gotta assume that there is something lovable about it, even if it ain't for you.

neither piece is a slouch. good luck.

best,
rlnyc.

I think you cant compare MP2 with Channel in the box.
Mp2 is a mic pre but CIB is channel stripe.
You must compare MP2NV with TG2 or API 512
.... it's my 0.2 cent.

That's quite true, but you can compare the sounds of the preamps? And that is what I would like to know, how does the sound of the CIB preamp compare to the sound of the Great River?

Hi rinyc,

My eyes must be failing me, for some strange reason I missed your message first time. Thanks a lot for the info, I appreciate it a lot. Problem is, Great River is not being exported to Europe so I cannot compare unless I buy.

Unfortunately my situation is probably the case for many people who keep asking for comparisons and for what things sound like. We just do not always (or even often) have the means for making comparisons, so informative replies like your own really are a great help.

I am only recording vocals and acoustic guitar and have a Brauner Valvet which at present I use with a Millennia STT1. I've been able to compare that with the CIB and to make a comparison in my own words, through the Millennia the vocals sounds as though I just had a really smooth drink (which I might have had) whereas with the CIB it sounds as though I just had been smoking (which I don't :-)). It brings out some nice non-aggressive, as you say hi-fi, vocal raspiness. Depending on the song, I really liked it, and I was wondering whether this difference is also more or less what I might expect from the Great River. If I understand your mail corrrectly, even more so?

Thanks again, Bob.
