Jackpot recording workshop

Guys,
Has anyone attended the recording workshop @ Jackpot?

I am going in July and would like to know what to expect and any info that may help me get the most out of it.

I attended the Feb workshop this year and I can tell you it was worth it. Larry has all the traits of a good instructor: Down-to-earth, patient, knowledgeable and happy to answer any and all questions.

The goal of the class was to track and mix one song performed by a studio musician. For our class, he had John Moen, drummer from The Decemberists record a song from start to finish. John played drums, bass, guitar, synth, organ, piano and did vocals with backing vocals as well. He was perfect for the class since he was able to play all instruments well enough to nail each track in only a few takes.

Larry does a great job of doing quick mic shootouts, preamp/compressor A/Bing during tracking. (By the end of the class you'll have a great apprecation for what can be accomplished with an Audix i5s and FMR RNCs).

It's not a hands-on class - Larry and his assistant will be handling mic placement and all equipment operation. However, you should feel free to ask at any time what they are doing and why they are doing it (this is how I learned the how/what/why with patchbays).

For the two-day session, Larry tracked everything through outboard pres/comps into a ProTools Digi002R through an Apogee Rosetta 800 (he only uses his console, an old Allen & Heath, for mixing/routing etc.). He has an Otari MX-80 24trk 2" we could have used, but I think his point was to demonstrate what can be done with a setup more in tune with what people in the class had (only one guy in the class had a tape machine and it was a 1/4" 2trk for mixdown).

Make sure to spend some time in Portland - it's a great town with endless amounts of things to do. Also, there's no sales tax in Oregon, so make sure to make a few gear purchases while you're there ;).

Just remember to have fun and ask a lot of questions. Larry won't disappoint you.

I am going with a buddy from Cali, we are going to meet a few days early and tour the local wine country.

I have been at this a while but, kind of in a bubble.
I am hoping that the interaction of watch and asking question of Larry and the others will open up some ideas in my head.

Now I am excited!
