I think they were in the 15K price range when I talked to them at the AES show in NYC a few years ago.

No dealers for the speaker. They will send them out for you to try.

I think they are 15K EACH. I heard these a few months ago and they are pretty great. A friend bought them and has been really happy with them. As a matter of fact, they were used on the upcoming Bonnie Raitt record. They seemed accurate AND musical at the same time, if that is of any help...

They are also built like tanks -- literallly!! They are in a very heavy metal enclosure.

Cheers,
john

Linns

Hi,

We had a set of them at the film center in Berkeley during AES week in San Francisco last year. The servo controlled dual woofers sounded great, very low and very tight. They made our reference Genelec 1032s sound sloppy by comparison. The mids and highs despite trying various adjustment combinations wasn't as smooth as the 1032s.

The Linns are three way and the tweeters seem to be of the supertweeter variety. The 1032s are two way and then reverse the polarity of the mid/highs from the woofer. So it seemed like the stereo image appeared wider with the 1032s than the Linns.

I've never had a chance to mix thru the Linns but I suspect I could get used to the sound easily.

I guess now LINN won't have to use ATC's in their own studio.

I just got this email from Nicola Hunter at Linn:

Hi George

Thanks for your e-mail, good to hear from you.

In answer to some of the questions posed on the site:

The Linn 328As are priced at $19,000 ex TAX per pair - I have attached a copy of the Linn 328A technical specification sheet as a PDF for your information and can provide any further details you require.

The smaller model, the Linn 318A, features the same Linn proprietary 3-K driver array as the 328A but with a single 8" servo-controlled active bass drive unit. This model has a studio price of $12,000 ex TAX per pair, again information attached for your reference.

We are currently developing the professional audio market in a direct capacity and as such any enquiries should be directed either to our US office or to our Head Office in Glasgow (details for both below) . We are also currently investigating potential distribution partners.

Holy crap!

I love Linn hifi stuff so I expect these to be really nice but the prices are outrageous...

I thought the smaller ones looked cool but $12,000? - they had better be something special. Kind of a competitor for Barefoots MiniMain12 maybe. I wish they could do something around the 2-3k mark..

I wonder how many of these they will sell. For nearfields thats a lot of money - its mastering monitors price range. Hmm any ME's need nearfields?

Anyone remember "Walk Across The Rooftops"?

I got obsessed with Linn when I bought the Blue Nile's "Walk Across The Rooftops," one of the records that changed my life.

It was put out by Linn's record company, later licensed to A&M. I believe it started life as a "stereo demonstration record" (I wish someone would pay my band money to make a sonic masterpiece... hmmm.... note to self, seek succour from stereo manufacturers... check...).

I ended up going to the Linn store in Chicago --- is it still there? --- and spending WAY too much money on home hi-fi.

Linn stuff sounds great to me.

Someone should re-master the first two Blue Nile Records. Can't deal with the last two, but the first two are amazing.

Linn 328's

@ $19,000 a pair the speakers are an absolute bargain!
I've had a pair for 18 months, try & find anything as good for
double the money. You won't. You will not believe how good they
are untill you've heard them. They translate across all playback
systems better than any other speaker I've heard. They let you
know where you're going wrong & do not flatter in the slightest,
that's not to say they're not great to work on, they are, but they
do what a reference monitor should & not colour what's being
played through them.

You're also wrong about the last 2 TBN albums - but you will learn!

Well, I've been wrong about albums before, so I hope you're right. I love the Blue Nile, love them a lot. I really WANT to love their latest works, but I have to say they seem to be getting increasingly bland. I miss the sonic adventurism of the first disc and the serene understatement of the second.

I think "Hats" is a minimalist masterpiece. I love that they gave such a long-anticipated and heart-wrenching record such a prosaic title.

p.s. I guess we shouldn't hijack the Linn thread discussing the Blue Nile, though. I don't want to be rude...

These have been around since 2003...this is all that comes up on google.com

http://www.stereotimes.com/comm062003.shtm
http://mixonline.com/news/audio_linn_show_new/

At the 114th Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention Linn has shown their very first professional audio product. Specifically, their new 328A Professional Monitor Loudspeaker that is a versatile reference unit designed for reproducing precise and reliable full-range sound. This active reference monitor is for near-field and mid-field monitoring. This four-way active loudspeaker design delivers a flat, extended frequency response combining pitch accuracy with excellent power handling and includes Linn's active amplification and crossovers controlling each individual drive unit. The bass is servo-controlled to deliver precise and smooth lower frequency production. The 328A loudspeaker enables stable console-mounting where the console meter bridge is able to support the 328A or can be mounted immediately behind the console on suitable stands.
