Jules, your roving reporter here...

here's a photo of one I took at the Sounds Expo show last weekend

Underneath it is the "THREE-SUM Split and Sum Device"

The benefits of multi-band processing, with the ability to apply different parameters to different sections of the audio bandwidth have been apparent to sound engineers for quite some time. However, ‘locking in’ your audio to any one specific multi-band unit can vastly reduce the creative options. The desired combination of processing to deal with low frequency energy, the vocal mid range and high frequency detail and enhancement is not necessarily available from any one manufacturer.

The Drawmer THREE-SUM opens up a whole new set of options allowing the engineer to split the audio into two or three bands and apply his or her own sonic signature to each part of the audio bandwidth.

You KNOW that R&B dance cats are going to be onto this like bees onto honey

I've been waiting for this device. I have tried analog processing like this with a P.A. style crossover, without total satisfaction. I'm glad to see a company address this. When do these new boxes hit the streets?

I don't know either, these are first showings but I expect I will know numbers shortly. The 3 band compressor is the first of the new Signature Series from Drawmer where he finally cut himself loose to do everything he's always wanted. I do not think its a three band 1968. the three sum sort of grew from that, as many might want to use a different compressor on highs vs lows.

As soon as I have real units I'll let you know! (late summer/fall?).

The three-sum should be around 1100 euro......shipping in around 2-3 months

Crossover slopes are 6dB/octave.....I'm very dissapointed with that!...they should be switchable 6/12/18dB.......6dB is waaay too weak for extreme mixing techniques.....anyone else?

Agree, it should have optional slopes.

Hey... doesn't Tube-Tech makes a 3-band compressor/limiter similar to this?

I think you are wrong on the price. I think it will be a wee bit more than that. I hear 3000 pounds is the price discussed at the show (for the UK).

The slopes, I will ask. This one may be customizable or order a slope you want.

Brad, I'm referring to the 3-sum, not the compressor.....i got the price from Drawmer themselves....but they said it could change......they also told me it's 6dB/oc slopes.....that's lame..they gotta add switchable slopes!

Yes, the 3 sum should be reasonable. Obviously I speak to Drawmer directly too, Ivor Drawmer in fact. NOw that NAB is almost done, I'll be talking to Ivor. There is a limit to what can be done for reasonable money, so "lame" is not quite the word I would use!

For mastering 6dB/oc is great but i predict that most mix/production guys won't like it.....anyone who buys it will be into hard-core mixing techniques, so would gladly pay more for the steepers filters....the questions is, how much more would it cost?

You gonna keep chipping in with the same damn thing every time or what? I think I'm beginning to figure out that you'd like steeper or switchable slopes... Please post again and let me know.

Darius:
I have spoken to Ivor about this, swithcable slopes. It ain't gonna happen with the 3 Sum due to pots and cost: we need multigang pots all over the place, major big expensive multigang pots. The box would be 3X the cost just for the pots, and then we have problems with the freq centers needing to shift a bit with different slopes to provide proper summing. So now you need adjustable fine tune freq...its getting more complex by the minute and the price is rising! Welcome to world of practical product development.
