Rode K2 if you've got to be under $1000. It sounds much better than the NTK for those who have heard it.

Isn't there reduced pricing on the Soundelux U195? You might want to give it a try. An excellent vocal mic and a nice mic for ac. guitar.

I know we sell them but I'll stand behind this recommendation all day long. Peluso 22 251 and it's under $1000 shipped to your door (as long as you're in the continental USA).

If you go the way of the Neumann I'd recommend the TLM193 over the 103. The 193 has a silky high end in comparison to the 103's brightness.

I'd rather use a 103 on instruments but maybe that's just me.

Without a second of hesitation - Soundelux 195 - nothing mentioned even comes close!
Great on just about anything you hang it in front of.

AEA R-84 hands down - it's the best sounding, most versatile mic in that price range & blows just about everything else away on vocals & acoustics. You might need to get a powerful pre to drive it though, as it sucks the juice...

I own a soundelux U195, and a Neumann U87 and a Peluso 2247. The Peluso is around the price of the Soundelux and it is much bigger sounding mic. It has been beating out the u195 and the u87 most of the time around here. I am not a dealer. I just really like this mic.

BLUE

Hi there, if your budget is $1000 Euros I would recommend a Blue Kiwi or Mouse, the kiwi is a little more and the mouse less, both are really solid great sounding mics.

Buy my Audio Technica that's been used for about 30 minutes and is like new for $400USD, then spend the other $600 on a better pre. If you really want a great sound, get a single OSA channel and a lunchbox. That'll run you a grand...just under actually. Then get my AT4050 for $400 USD. With the exchange rates what they are, that's a steal.
It's a great, versatile mic. I'm just getting out of the "owning a studio" business and selling everything off.
later,
m

Blue is dong a promotion: Buy Robbie, get a Bluebird free. I think it's a pretty decent deal. Also never been a big AT fan. But hey, that's just me. As far as tube pres go, Robbie's not gonna blow your mind, but it does sound respectable.

FYI

I wouldn't trust a single BLUE mic since they've outsourced the manufacture to China. There are several long threads over on 3d audio about the dispute between the apparent designer & manufacturer of the components in the tried & true BLUE's & the owner of BLUE. Until I hear how their production has changed since October 2004, I'd be wary of buying anything new.

I still say you can't go wrong with an AEA.

No one mentioned the AT 4060. It's fatter sounding than my U195.

This manufacturing change to China has been refuted by Blue as far I am aware. According to Blue manufacturing is being to moved to the U.S., Westlake CA more specifically. Blue claims that this "tried and true" Blue owner is in fact a disgrunted parts supplier. I have yet to see a Blue mic which is made in China. In regards to Vioet designs, I have yet to speak to anyone who as actually seen an actual mics. My last conversation with Sweetwater was about a week ago and they informed me that the U.S. manufacturing facility should be operational in about a month. I personally feel completely comfortable with U.S. manufacturing and feel it will enable them to keep better control of their product.

As far I am concerned the Blue Mics are in excellent choice.

I hope that's true. I don't think BLUE has been especially forthcoming though regarding the info on who actually holds the patents to the capsules, etc. - which raises suspicion on my part. I think they have made great products in the past - I'm in wait and see mode presently though & will remain there until the full story comes to light.

Luckily 2nd hand prices for Blue mics are SUPER Low. I've gotten a cactus for $1300 before, you can get a Blue Mouse for $750, and Bottles regularly go for like $2500.

Why buy new!?!?
