jules! overhead secrets

jules, I've been using your setup to smooth out cymbals in pro tools:

royer sf-12 --> fatso --> hedd

I'm still picking up too much drums and not enough cymbals... what is your mic placement? also, do you use the compressor on the fatso when tracking oh? if so, which fatso compressor do you use?

Wow a drummer with more drums then cymbals in the overheads.... What about them darn hats...
What do the drums sound like in the room...
To much drums again, maybe a heavier set of cymbals is needed, or try higher..

Me? - AS LOW OVER THE KIT AS POSSIBLE

Thats how I do it in my tiny drum booth.

Another thing you can do is place it in front of the kit at an angle pointing up

Try compression to even things out?

In my experience if you get a good kit sound with just the Royer overhead & a kick mic(s) you are GOLDEN.. Its IMHO a sign of a great drum room!

Try that (expirement with mic lower & higher) Kick & SF-12 with mild compression.

TIP - I would use the Fatso on Kick & snare mics! Use some of the valve or tape (if you got it) emulation on the OH with the Hedd but skip the Fatso.. The Royer is DARK ENOUGH, I dont feeel you need to hold any extra HF back..

In the end, if none of this satisfies you, you may find you end up using the SF-12 as an "in front of kit" room mic & use othe mic on cymbals...

No drum room is tiny compared to mine. How big is your's? I just expanded mine to 5 1/2' to 7'. quite roomie compared to the 4X4 I was using. I use a trigger for kick though.
