Brian Eno

Does anyone know of any good interviews with Eno about what kind of gear he is using and what his production processes are? Google brings up thousands, but in the ones I clicked on he doesn't really address the specifics (eg, what racks he uses, what the chains are, software platform etc).

Any tips greatly appreciated as usual.

Thanks

From an old Keyboard mag interview he said "The people who get bored are the ones who make a difference". Can't remember anything else.

from all that i have read about eno he is a supporter of "whatever works, or at hand" methods of doing anything.

one my favourite ever quotes is from his diary/book, whose name eludes me:

"backing vocals will save the world"

He wrote a one year diary....

It was interesting, he is very busy, its clear that a LOT of stuff comes in his direction and he has to pick & chose what to accept from all the offers.

"Bono is on line 1 for you"

"Oxford University on line 2 want to make you honorary dean of the "Everything Genius Department"

"The Pope wants to know if you are free for lunch, on line 3"

"Your grant from the Simply Being Brilliant foundation has come through, they want to know where to send the $100,000 cheque to"

"What shall we say to Bob Dylan? It's the 3rd time he has called this morning"

Kinda like that for 365 days straight.

I quickly got ticked off reading it, I kinda felt, er hang on, actually I am kinda busy too! So I tossed it after a few chapters... probably jealous.....

lots of dx7 thru a h3000 harmonizer for some of those classic synth sounds....maybe try the crystal echos patch on the h3k and stick a cool ambient synth thru for a good place to start.

I loved the diary. Highly recommended read. It's a little thick in places but it's very interesting reading in terms of process.

...or the Eventide Oriville...preset DESERT ANGELS also helps a lot.... as well as the 960 FAT PLATE with at least 14 sec. DECAY.....

I love some of Eno´s more quiet works like THE PEARL with Harold Budd.
Absolutely brilliant thumbsup

For sure I´ll buy the book.

Hee. No, I'm not looking for that kind of self-congratulatory genius thing either. Looking more for the gearslut angle. The links above have some good leads. Still, many questions remain....which is why I think we should get him to guest mod here.

(LOL)

I got a call from a senior Gearslut THIS MORNING of all days, that has a chum working with the great man himself TODAY and wanted to know if he should pass on a request (from me / the site) to guest moderate,

I of cource said yes!!!

"Line 6, someone? (Jules ??) from some weird sounding site called "great slutz" (???) wants you to moderate????"

I will just be next door, boiling my head.....

Hi Brian, welcome to the site!

This thread was a nice reminder to order "A Year with Swollen Appendices."

Already own (and recommend) "Vertical Color of Sound," which has some great quotes from Eno's early writings.

I appreciate Brian's way with words and sound. I wish I could get the former on a more regular basis (or is Eno a columnist somewhere and I just don't know about it?).

If we could get him to moderate, even for a week, that'll be great!!

In addition to what has been mentioned above, check out the oblique strategies.

Also, there's a DVD on making of Joshua Tree where you can also see Daniel Lanois along with Eno.

I've been interested in Eno since I was about 15 (am 39 now ). What a wonder it would be if he would discretely show up here for some dialog!

There is a website called Enoweb that has an enormous collection of articles and interviews. His way of working doesn't have much to do with gear selection and everything to do with strategies for getting great performances. I highly recommend the Appendices book also, especially for some insight into his practices.

The diary is an interesting read. Didn't find the diary self-congratulatory in the slightest. Lots of interesting observations, but a bit unstructured -- it's a diary, after all.

Here's the gear. Most amusing.

My favorite quote was the one about Bono, "the way he drives he MUST believe in the afterlife..."

gear from memory: DX7, Prophet-VS, Eventide H3000 or better, Digitech Harmonizer.. mostly cheap stuff which he knows thoroughly & intimately.

I never saw Brian as self-congratulatory. On the contrary... I don't know him myself, but he does sound to me as a very constructive guy.

Absolutely! We don't have to be famous to get busier than him, do we? We may just not get as much money... but that's not the reason we do music...
