Power amp = huge guitar pickup noise!

so i just realized when i turn on my cranky old carver pm 300 power amp suddenly my guitar gets noisier than hell. i thought it was maybe having the guitar amp plugged into the same outlet as the power amp was the issue but it is not. when i plugged my fender into another socket it was the same deal. when i put my guitar near the power amp the noise gets MUCH worse.

it's like one of the old CRT computer monitors only worse. huge buzz. turn off the carver, noise gone.

do newer power amps (hafler etc) avoid this issue?

this thing powers my BM6p s (i can hear the bass btw, it just does not shake the room)

Has the hum changed, or have you recently discovered this hum?
If you're quite close, your pup's will pick up trafo hum and so on;
Esp. guitars with s.coils.

Hi

I think that you'll find that Carver amps have a form of switched mode power supply that pumps noise into the ac and also radiates a strong field.

I don't think there's a fix other than having the amp further from you... like near the South Pole.

well i have now determined that if the guitar is more than 3 feet from the carver there is no noise increase when i turn it on. one foot away is NOISY. 3-4+ feet away no noise.

this is absolutely an issue of the "field" rather than the AC.

so i guess that is the cheap work around.

well since you ALWAYS get a little noise from guitar pups (esp) single coil i had thought it was always there because i almost always track in here w/ the power amp on. i also recently replaced my old CRT w/ an LCD to solve that noise source....

4+ feet from the carver and w/ the new mac flat panel hooked up instead of the old sony trinitron this guitar is now damn quiet.

life is good.
