| Gear maniac | Studio Electronic C2s for hip-hop drums?
Hey, im pretty new to this forum and i was just wondering if i could get some help from you hip-hop guys please. I was thinking of getting a Studio Electronics C2s compressor for my drums and to process them through. I'm also thinking about a Avalon 737sp for the Preamp and EQ. Im just using these for my drums only to give them a sound. I want to do commercial mainstream hip-hop and want my drums to sound clean, rich, full, warm, tight, and punchy. You know that in your face sound and i guess that saturated sound you hear on todays mainstream hip-hop. I guess you can say im looking for the similar drum sound on 50 Cent/G-Unit/Dr.Dre beats. Would the these 2 peices of gear be a good choice for my drums? All my drums are in mono. Would the Empirical labs Distressor be a better choice for a compressor for my drums than a Studio Electronics C2s? Would there be a better choice for a Preamp and EQ for the hip-hop drum sound im looking for than a Avalon 737? If you hip-hop guys could help me out that would be wicked. |

I think that perhaps you've seen all the talk on this forum about C2 being really good. Yep, the C2 would be the best comp choice for hiphop BUT it would be the ALAN SMART C2 --- not SE's. Alan Smart C2/and the SSL branded ones are the ones you want to get that punch and snap that you need. Search on this forum for this. It's THE hiphop tool.

The MPCist, thanks for the help. Im going to check out the Alan Smart c2's and do some research. So would the Avalon 737sp be good for the Preamp and Eq for the hip-hop drum sound im after? |

Granted that the Smart C2 is the tool of choice for Hiphop, the Studio Electronics C2S is a fine device in it's own right. It can deliver plenty of snap and punch . Also, if you take the top off and adjust a pot (labelled R16 if memory serves) inside it becomes the coolest and most expensive fuzz box that I know of! I like it on drums. Not one for the two bus though IMO. Best Vari-Mu |
