external hard drive

im considering getting a external hard drive for my pc and use it for all my audio.
will it transmit audio fast enough through the usb cable to get the same results as a internal drive?
having external drives could be great for back up but I dont wanna compromise performance.......
any insight on this question?
and what drive should I buy?

BRyan

I just bought a Maxtor 80 gig (7200) external USB 2 drive for backup and that just smokes. Model 3100 cost $100
I hear great things about Glyph too.

My last project ate up over 120 CD's in backup.

I do have FW but USB for file transfer is plenty fast and I keep my FW dedicated to my interface.

P&B,

Make sure it's USB2, USB1.1 will probably be way too slow. I use firewire drives, but USB2 wasn't used as widely when I went external so I didn't have much of a choice. (Most external drives do both now anyway!)

Not to hijack the thread, but will PTHD run off of firewire? Anybody?

Yes it does

The studio I work in has about 12 of the Glyph GTKey Hard drives and with an assortment of the docking bays, they work very well, I record straight to them while tracking and mix right from the files on them. They are built like a tank thumbsup plus it's nice that the factory is right next door with many friends working there

so yeah, If you were going to get a pure audio hard drive get one of theirs

well, the LaCie ones work well too, I own a d2 and many other students use the Porsche models they are also solid, but Glyph just kicks so much butt

2 cents included

Peter

The faster solution would be external SATA drives:

Just break down and buy the DVD burner! You could have had that on 20 discs...or something close to that.

It's been a while since I've invested a lot of time on Windows XP, so if any of this is wrong, shout at me and set me straight

XP should recognize firewire drives as soon as they are plugged in, you may need to install drivers for a firewire card, but the drive its self should be fine

Format it in some windows format (Fat 32??) Panther (OSX 10.3) can read and write windows formated HD's I don't exactly know if it is the other way around

I think this should answer most of your questions

Just bought a Maxtor 500Gb with USB, 2 fire wire ports from Fry's on sale for 239.99 and it works great, I'm even using a 10 ft USB cord. Make sure your computer meets its spec.
