U 195 or L47FET ?

Hi there,

I am recording acoustic string instruments and vocals most of the time!
My mics so far are:
AT 4050-RODE classic mk1-Beyer mc 740-AKG 451(ck3)-Beyer M88.

Which one of these mics I should buy? U 195 or L47FET?
I dont have the luxury to hear these mics here in Greece.

Thank you all
regards
Yiannis

me? i'd get the u-195... but thats just me and my applications, ymmv. even if you decide to add another flavor(s) down the road the u-195 will be a most excellent tool to have in the arsenal.
good luck,

Thank you Joshua!

So do you think that U 195 is better from what I have so far?

yes, i find the u-195 to be considerably more useful than the condenser mics you listed in my applications.

you mean which applications? if so, then they would be vocals, acoustic guitar and other various acoustic stringed instruments, drum overheads, kik drum, electric and bass cabs, front of kit mic for drums, toms, etc... etc... in comparison to the rode and at stuff (i'm speaking of the models i've used personally... no, i haven't heard 'em all, but i did kinda give up on 'em after awhile) which i can sometimes find an application that they don't suck at but i'm rarely (if ever) blown away. hope this clarifies things some. maybe i need to ask you, what don't you like about your mics in the applications you're trying to improve? mic 'x' is too grainy? harsh? nasally? or boring? etc... if you could be a bit more specific about what you like/dont like then maybe we can move in one direction or another. my u-195 is better answer to your question was simply 'in general' it usually kills any rode/at stuff i've used. not to say that on one particular day, in one particular room, source, application, arrangement, blah, blah, blah that another mic (be it cheaper or more expensive) may be just the ticket that day. the u-195 simply has a much, much higher batting average for me. ymmv.
good luck,
joshua

I have not used the 195 but have used other soundelux mics. I find they have more character than the lawsons I own. I really like my lawson l47fet mics as great vocal mics with the right preamp and find that they are great on just about any source. I love my vintage neumanns but used too often on to many tracks can screw up a mix for me. The lawson has a clean and clear tone that adds well when used on a lot of tracks in a mix. As well can do the thick ballsey large diaphram lead vocal when paired with the right pre (I often use a manley)

The U195 is such a great mic.
I don't have a wide knowledge of what hundreds of different mics sound like or anything, but I used one at someone elses studio and went out and bought one soon after.

To me, even though it's not a tube condensor, it is the sound that I had in my head when I thought what a really great smooth, rich tube condensor would sound like.
Goes to show you tubes as an idea might have more weight on the audio market than the reality of what tubes actually do.

Anyway, you'e not looking for a tube mic anyway. But the U195 really is very smooth and rich and flatters a lot of voices and acoustic instruments.

I would go with a revoiced phantom c. These mics kill anything with strings and they're an incredible vocal mic.

Well, first of all i must what pre i am using.737sp

About my mics:
Rode too wooly.Thick with that smily curve but dont feet well in my mixes.
Mc 740 harsh. Again that smily curve to my ears but with more solid character.
451 better on guitars!
4050 nice couple with the 737sp I thing. You can do later whatever you like using eq.

Maby ist my room but my mics don't have focus! What I mean in that I can't "hear" around a track that I have record .

I hope that you will understand what I mean.
