Thread Starter | Can anyone throw any light on this problem? (or was it gremlins?)
Hello All, I was baffled by a problem recording a drum kit the other day and was wondering if anyone had any idea what it could be. I was recording a drum kit (2 overheads, Bass drum front and back and Snare top and bottom). I had the overheads set-up differently to how i normally set them up with them both in slightly front and to the sides of the kit facing in at the drummer. However the left overhead (drummers right) made this wierd bassy popping noise (that i thought initially sounded like an electrical/lead problem) that was quite a lot louder than the sound of the drums it was recording. I tested out the leads and swapped the mics, recorded silence etc etc and established the problem was to do with the position of the mic and the pop was created after some bass drum kicks. The mic stand in question was nearest to the bass drum but wasn't touching it in any way, there was no obvious reason why this noise was occuring. When i moved the mic stand to slightly behind the kit and to the drummers right, (my default position) there were no more problems. Has anyone else encountered this kind of thing, or was it gremlins? Cheers Phil |

With certain drummers, myself included, I have overloaded some condenser mics, even with the pad engaged. I usually swap out the mic if that is the case.

it's always gremlins. if your new mic position has pacified them, consider yourself lucky. thumbsup gregoire del ubk . |
