The Gyraf stuff...

...is lovely to behold.

Never heard the name before (let alone heard the equipment) but I find it very visually appealing, for whatever that's worth.

It looks cool.... but read the fine print. That cool meter doesn't give a proper read out. They even say it in the manual. I am sure it sounds great, but that bothers me. It looks like a similar design to the EAR 660.

Unless things have changed, it's vapor-ware in the US...

And they're great about not returning inquiries.

But I hear the EQ is quite nice. Shame I can't try one though I've wanted to for some time now...

My experience has been like Brad's.

I wanted to try out the X-Compressor and the XIV stereo EQ... I did finally get put into contact with a US "distributor"who said there were no demo units available .. It's strictly a buy-it-to-try-it kinda thing. Since he wrote me with a generic-looking "@guitars.nu" email address, and since they're like $4k apiece .. .. well .. .. ..

Maybe some other time.

If that was a bloke called Jorgen Pettersson, I don't think he's involved anymore. He was briefly involved in their distribution, but I believe he's out of the picture.

Sorry I didn't pipe in sooner. I just heard of this thread.

Gyraf Audio is a small company (just Jakob and I). We have no dealers anywhere in the world outside of scandinavia. We are not associated with Primal Gear or Jorgen. Our company model most closely resembles EMI or RCA's R&D dept. in that our gear is built for specific needs of our studio (Feedback). In that vein other studios, engineers and producers with similar problems have purchased our units.

I Know that I am particularily slow at answering my email (Brad, in your case you asked about a unit that is just now available again). Unfortunately I usually have to answer 15000 emails about SSL clones that we do not manufacture.

You can find our units in a lot of places in the world but unfortunately not down at the corner pro shop. We sell all our units with a 15 day money back guarantee (that can be extended by mutual agreement). This puts many people off trying our products because they feel unsure sending money to someone they don't know. And yet they believe our policy should be to lend out units to strangers in other parts of the world trusting that they'll return them safe and sound ( I know of no other manufacturers doing this). I, like many of you, wish the world was a nicer place.

I know some people have questioned whether they could trust us to maintain or repair our units if they had any problems. Please ask ICP Studios in Brussells if they minded that Jakob and I travelled there at our own expense to calibrate their 3 G10's after a fashion they preferred. Jakob must be THE most trustworthy person I have ever met.

I don't know where the 4000 dollar quote comes from. Here's our current price list:

G2 tube recording channel 14500 DKK + VAT + shipping (2,513 USD approx.)
G3 stereo optical compressor 12500 DKK + VAT + shipping (2166 USD approx.)
G9 Dual tube mic pre 10000 DKK + VAT + shipping (1733 USD approx.)
G10 vari-mu stereo compressor 20000 DKK + VAT + shipping ( 3466 USD approx.)
G14 Parallel-passive Stereo EQ 19500 DKK + VAT + shipping (3380 USD approx.)

Temporarily available:
G10-II vari-mu stereo compressor (same electronics, alternative meter)
18000 DKK + VAT + shipping (3120 USD approx.)

Specially made on order only:

G6 stereo +/- stereo EQ ~ 14000 DKK + VAT + shipping (2426 USD approx.)
G8 MONO passive EQ ~ 9000 DKK + VAT + shipping (1560 USD approx.)

All are subject to change.

Since all units are handmade for additional cost we will customize
units according to the clients wishes (e.g. stepped resistors instead of
pots for mastering purposes).

Shipping on single units usually runs about 100 USD.

I hope that's answered some of your questions.

For what it's worth, I'm fine with the trial-period purchase method of doing business (as you describe above)... I was just a little less than enthused to do so with someone who was introduced as the US distributor, but whose only immediately apparent link to anything resembling professional audio was the word "guitar" in his email address.

That said, would you hypothetically be selling directly to the US with this 15 day trial period, or through a dealer/distributor? What would be the course of action if there were a repair needed here (Florida is a little further than Belgium )

Thanks!

We have no dealers in the US and so only sell direct. As far as service, there's the rub, we are located in Denmark and so the units must be sent back to us if we should perform any repairs. That said our stuff is very straight forward, tube based equipment that is easily servicable. We're glad to walk any tech/owner through any repairs or calibration procedures. ( Florida by plane is probably a shorter trip than Brussels by train. Maybe cheaper too)

I forgot to mention that US residents do not pay our VAT but must pay all applicable US import duties.

84K,

Don't worry about that.

We've recently had to update the meter because of unavailability of the original one - and the new meter gives accurate read-out of occuring gain reduction. It may not be quite as good-looking as the old meter, but it's much more precise at indicating what's going on. Maybe I should mention that we've never had any complaints about the action of the old meter - even though it did not tell you exactly what count of dB's you were knocking off, it fully served the purpose of letting you know what you were doing...

We haven't yet had the official mugshots taken, but here's a snapshot of how the G10 Stereo vari-mu compressor looks like today:

Best regards,

Jakob Erland

Wow. Your stuff is just beautiful.

I'm always amazed at how visually great some of the modern boutique audio hardware is, how much personality and style can be injected. I mean, is there any question that, for example, DW Fearn has an aesthetic? It may not be one that appeals to you, but there's definitely a style. I personally love the look of the Gyraf stuff. And when you work with something every day in your studio, that starts to matter. I have a Manley 16x2 tube line mixer and it makes me happy just being around it.

Beautiful are indeed (like the Fearns).
Has anybody had the chance to try/use the parallel passive stereo eq?

The G9 tube pre is interesting to me. I was thinking about a Pendulum, but the Gyraf is quite a bit cheaper. I wonder what it sounds like?

The old meter didn't work right, so they repleaced it... only that was the coolest part of it! Can you make the graphic and look of the old meter with the accuracy of the new meter?

The old meter is no longer being manufactured that's the reason they have put in a new meter - I think it looks incredible with the new meter

The Gyratec X is a marvellous piece of equipment.

I was considering the Manley Vari Mu and tested it against the GX. Although they have somewhat different chraracteristics, overall I preferred the GX and got one (with the old meter) instead of the Manley. I remember the first month I had a permanent smile on my face. The prices are very reasonable, the quality outstanding.

The metering "problem" is no problem for me, 12 o' clock meter setting is around 6 db of GR, and it gives me the appropriate meter action I need, then I use my ears.

I recently mastered a 2CD soundtrack album for the Japanese game company Namco using the GX as main compressor, it really provided that phat and punchy sound the electronic music needed. In Japan, for some reason, they are used to thinner and brighter sounding masters (shrill, some would say), so they were absolutely blown away with the full and phat sound, so I got more work on that account. :-)

The passive EQ sounds great too, a very unique piece of hardware, and as all Gyraf products looks amazing. I've only played around with it, I don't have one (yet). The G-III is also a great compressor.
